There is a FAQ. I read it.

Just a plea for any hard evidence this happens.

I doubt it - seems like a lot of trouble unless you really have done something criminal. Simply for breaking a contract and owing a little money I doubt immigration would get involved - unless bribed to....

So - anybody out there been held back or know of anyone who's been held back from leaving when doing a runner?

This is quite urgent. Thanks in advance.

I think a similar thread i read because I post sooo much was that you cant be stopped leaving unless your boss saying that you have done something criminal and therefore they will detain you until it's sorted out.

Anyone held here against their wishes would be the victim of a serious crime.

Do you know this is happening?

Never heard of it happening....it seems outlandish behaviour.

there was a thread (now a FAQ) about someone threatened with this....

But I read to the end and there was no follow up of it actually happening.

So I figure it's a no. Just canvassing as a check for my peace of mind.

I will be breaking my contract shortly for personal reasons and don't want to be messed around at the airport. If I gave notice - they would probably make deductions and I would lose out - unfairly I think.

Why are you so worried about being detained? What have you done?

Nothing...

just the contract breaking thing.

Anyone been held back when all they did was leave the job without notice.

It is a midnight run, to use the parlance.

Nothing is actually certain yet - my plans are chaotic.

So - anybody heard of it happening to anyone you know? Not the urban legends that abound - any verifiable cases?

As long as NOONE knows that you are doing a runner, you should have no problems from your boss. Customs will only give you a problem if your 'vacation visa' (usually 90 days), has expired because you have not yet process your E2 visa at the immigration office nearest you. You will know if you have an E2 visa if you are in possession of an Alien Registration Card. If you have that, you are fine to leave as you will simply be required to hand it in to the immgration officers at the airport. If you don't have a card, the will give you more hassle but most likely, they will just levy you a fine.

If this doesn't answer your question, use the 'SEARCH' function from this page to find the information you are looking for. A huge number of posts have been written addressing just your question.

Oh and dont tell your recruiter that your doing a bolt.

This girl at my friends school, notified her recruiter that she was leaving (I dont know why she did this, Maybe hoping he could pay for her ticket home)

Anyway the recruiter not wanting to be stiffed on his finders fee (Chick had only been there a week) dobbed her in to her Boss. But since she left on a weekend, there wasnt much the boss could do because the boss couldnt find her.

Let that be a lesson to the wise

Just leave and hand in your registration card. There's no way they would know you're doing a runner and I doubt they would care enough to stop you if they did. Airport Immigration has better things to do.
