Seems like many who post on this board don't even teach English here.

What do you do here in Korea?

Judging from the low standard of written English quite common on this board I'd guess that very few are teachers of English: whether they are English teachers is perhaps another subject Wink

I work on contracts on large infratsructure projects, usually with international contractors. Been here nearly 6 years, no plans to go "home".

Come off of your cloud friend. Most of us do teach English. But we forgot that we are graded for spelling and grammar ON A DISCUSSION BOARD.

In case you didn't catch my drift: THIS IS A DISCUSSION BOARD, NOT A UNIVERSITY PAPER.

I used to teach English, but not anymore. If I ever go back to Korea, I'd love to work for п. I currently work in higher ed and am very knowledgable about admission requirements, scholarship for int'l students, transfer work evaluation, and etc. My Korean friends keep telling me that I'd make a killing in Korea by possibly opening my own п, but I am not sure of it cuz I know it is tough to run a business.

I would think that anyone who knows English well would be automatically conditioned to post using proper grammar and spelling. I can understand typing mistakes, but when someone confuses "there" with "they're", then that is a sign of poor grammar. I doubt those people "automatically" change their grammar abilities when teaching.

im here milking the pot. and do a bloodly good job. probably make more than most you real teachers here. but its not how you teach. its how you play the game.
Ive been doing it for 7 years now. started at 22 here.. so I am pretty experienced at it now. sure my spelling and grammer sucks. but hey. I wing it. hahahha. I dont teach uni students. IM a baby sitter and real expensive one. Laughing
the game of life! remember that game. Wink
must be a player to survive. and I am a good one. wheeling and dealing.
I dont have ESL ,ENglish Degree or even a teaching degree..
I have a normal MArketing degree which doesnt make me qualified to teach to esl. but I have been doing it 7 years now, I can work a class room like a hooker will work a stag night! blind folded! too easy now!

I dont plan on being in this field much longer. Ive done it to the max!
nothing else to learn I have masted this korean ESL game! I know how to deal, I know how to get paid, I know how to entertain the students!.
I have learned all the BS that goes with the hakwon BS..
emmm maybe I need to make a documentary about it now..

Itaewon Guy, it took you 7 years to master the ability to wow'em at a hakwon? Are you sure that is something you should be lauding yourself for? Next, you're going to tell us you nailed down riding a bicycle in just under a year. Laughing

I took his advice he had been here 6 years..
I have worked at over 25 hakwons, 10 public schools, COUNTLESS houses! and done everything else.. TV teaching, Web teaching Phone teaching, Officeman, Freetalking in bars. blar blar blar.. worked on a tv show.. you think you can master ity like me in 6 months???
you're dreaming!!!
I did it all in about 2 years... but I was still learning.. I have repeated the process over the years.. and now can say I have masted it!!
no where else for me to go..

It always cracks me up when somebody gets pissy at someone else's lack of grammar or spelling ability and then makes a mistake themself. However, I think Wangja's post raises an interesting point.

I think the point here is also fair. There must be some middle ground. Doesn't there need to be some clarity in writing BECAUSE it's a discussion board. What's the point in having a discussion with someone who can't take the time to articulate their position clearly? If you need a special decoder ring to understand a post, who's going to take the time to respond to it?

Thoughts?
