None of my waitstaff friends made less than minumum, so that's what I'm basing my opinion on.

I can only assume you've worked both, and know this from experience. You know that counter workers are responsible for bringing stock up from downstairs, maintaining levels, and dealing with managers who seem to think the workers are slaves. Not to mention the obnoxious customers.

By customers?
If waitressing is really as terrible as it's being made out to be, and they make less than minimum wage, why not just work at McDonald's? They're always hiring.

So if they screw up 5 times, do they pay you? Tipping logic would dictate such action, wouldn't it? |

i didn't work at mcdonald's, but i worked at second cup for 6 years (good job during uni, though i have to admit that we got tips there, though they weren't that great). so i do know about both pretty well.
in montreal, rest. min wage is 6$/hr and reg. min wage is 7something.
you work as a waitress to make tips. but tips should earned. i totally agree with that. smile, do a little extra to make your client happy. besides, tips are earned doing table service, not counter service.
as for my 5% rule, i don't usually go places that the service is that bad, so it's not a problem! |

If they paid better, there would be a 15% increase in the price of food. I don't mind having my food cost 15% less and having that 15% as my lever of control, ideally ensuring a respectable level of service. |
Personally, I want guaranteed good service, and I want to know that the person giving it is earning their money without relying on my good will. Paying $75 for a meal and then having to slap down another $11.75 in order to be doing my fair share (thereby raising the meal deceptively to $86.75) is ridiculous.
Waitstaff expecting or demanding tips is ridiculous. It's a reward, not a right. |

$75 on a meal and you don't want to tip, huh? They must love you at Ruth's Chris. |

What the *beep* is Ruth's Chris? Speak English, *beep*.
Waitstaff expect $1.50 for a $10.00 meal by the 15% game. Yet, for giving similar service for a $100 meal, they expect $15. You're damn right I don't want to blindly fling money out of my wallet.
When I like the waitstaff at a place, I'll tip well. I've tipped $5 for an $8 meal before. If I get sucky service, I won't tip. However, I do not like the fact that waitstaff expects me to tip some amount, and will even start shit with me over the fact that a tip wasn't up to their satisfaction. I will tip based directly on the service, not on the price of the meal or what someone else thinks that they deserve because restaurant management is trying to weasel out of paying proper wages to people. |
