I am trying to lose some weight here, and I am having trouble finding natural foods that aren't over processed and don't have added sugar.

Is it my imagination or do they add sugar to the soy milk?

How about the tomato juice?

It seems all the fruit juices have added sugar? Why is that?

Anyone have any suggestions? Other than take up jogging... Rolling Eyes

I buy fresh fruit, vegetables, meats and grains, and encounter no sugar. I know its hard to get anything processed in any way without sugar. So you have to cook from scratch to avoid it. I make sure I always say no sugar when I order coffee.

I think it is very similar in the States, unless you shop at a health food store, and then they often substitute fruit juices for sweeteners- with no difference in the caloric and glycemic effect.

Give up juices - too much sugar - and not only if you try to lose weight. You should chew all your fruit, not drink it. For tonnes of valuable info on proper nutrition check out www.bodybuilding.com

I'm not much of a cook, but I have been buying some fresh vegetables and seeds to snack on. Pumpkin and sunflower seeds are great. I am trying to find flax seeds here, but no luck. I guess I'll have to ask someone back home if they can send me some.

To her modest listing of her accomplishments(PhD,"all but dissertation." That would be like my drop-out buddy saying High School "all but gr.11 &12"), desultude now adds mind reading. How the hell does being disgusted w/Korean tomato juice translate into "everything here sucks"??!! I'm glad you like the stuff....

Has anyone tried Korean food? There is a lot of it here for some reason and it is low in sugar.

Kochujang is a heavily-sugared product, so how do you figure?

Anyway, as was said, it's not just a Korean thing. Processed foods back home are heavily sugared as well.

No, but it is difficult to avoid.

Nor is it the only source of sugar in Korean food.

Korean food is sweeeeeeet.

It's too hard to avoid sugar here, unless you want to spend every night cooking. I just avoid drinking pretty much all of the drinks that aren't water (save one can of Coke per day)...this includes Powerade, 2% water, all of that crap. It's all sugary, and not the good kind. Same thing with juices...if you can't read the label, you can't check whether it's actually juice, or just high fructose corn syrup.

I also tend to dodge the junk food snacks, and usually just eat peanuts in between meals. And my portions are becoming smaller and smaller.

Try being a diabetic. Fresh fruits and vegetables. Pre cook some meals and freeze them My wife and I make soups and pastas and just reheat them when we want them. Exercise and portion control is the key. Its not so much what but how much you eat. Enjoy the weight loss, I am. Smile

Yes, the tomato juice here is undrinkable. And I love tomato juice. Crying or Very sad

I was surprised when they served me what I consider to be normal tomato juice on an Asiana flight to Osaka.

I tried carrot juice here once too. ONCE.
