My boss is such a scrooge so I was really shocked. The only way I was able to get it though was to say I'll stay another year. We had a meeting about my bonus a few weeks ago in which he started to claim poverty, etc, but when I said I wanted to stay another year he suddenly said he may be able to afford it if I move out of my apartment so he can get his deposit back, then I should get my own place and he will pay me rent every month. (350,000, wow, i can live in a square box maybe!)

So when I got my pay and bonus yesterday I was siked. But of course he failed to include my first month's rent on my supposed new place (you do pay at the beginning of the month here when you move in right?) and there was a 150,000 won fee deducted from my salary under the name "miscellaneous expenditures"...that's on top of my regular bills. I really was considering staying on for at least a few more months but forget it now. Sheesh! I'm so tired of practically having to beg for what I was promised. I love how they make you look like the greedy one when they're the ones shucking and jiving nickels and dimes. I already have had two or three meetings with him with my girlfriend translating. Do I have to go back for yet another one to ask about the 150,000 and to get a month's rent on a new place? What the hell is with these directors? I'm not going to do that and from what I can see lately, I'm lucky I got anything at all I guess and it's making me feel so much less guilty about quitting.

Worth Repeating:
"I love how they make you look like the greedy one when they're the ones shucking and jiving nickels and dimes."

"having to beg for what I was promised"
This seems to happen a lot in Korea. Hogwans, universities, and companies will try to save as much money as possible. Why not have a special tax or "miscellaneous expenditures" for the foreign teachers? Foreign teachers will not know.

Shawner,
If you didn't go to immigration to get an extension or have done a visa run then just grab the money and leave.

That's what I'm doing. Instead of just paying another 500,000 now he's out a teacher and being in the middle of nowhere, let's see how much he has to shell out to get a new one. Laughing

I second that!

Anyways, your school sounds like shyte so why do you even bother in any sort of renewal negotiations? If there's anything that I've learned over the years is don't dewel with these guys, you will get in over your head before you know it. Wanjangnim are ruthless and this is their home so they know the lay of the land better than you.

Just move on an consider yourself lucky that further dealings with that guy are no longer needed.
