I just finished my first week of CELTA training.

I have just one thing to say...

I have learned more about teaching English in one week than I did in 1 year doing my M.A. Applied Liinguistics at USQ.

Good for you. I know just how stressful it can be, especially when they are picking apart your pratice teaching.

The first and fourth weeks were the hardest for me.

Where are you taking the CELTA?

Congrats... keep at it.

But honestly, your MA was a waste then... hardly Applied at all. I've done the MA and it was absolutely superb for helping me to teach English.

Just goes to show that there are huge differences between MAs while CELTA helps to standardise the field.

Thanks for the kind words!

Yeah, I feel the M.A. is needed just to get the employers' attention.

Asians don't know what a CELTA is but they know what an M.A. is.

Yes, those info sessions after you teach are a little tense. I have been criticised for saying "Do you understand..." or "Does that sound all right...?" LOL!!!!

Also, I"ve been criticised for getting "sucked into the horse shoe" and not monitoring around the class from behind the students enough.

You know, if I was hiring and I had to chose between a CELTA and an M.A. - I'm almost certain that I'd chose the candidate who was a CETLA holder.

I had a job interview at a big university here and there were 7 professors on the hiring committee. I told them all that I was going to do the CELTA and none of them new what it was.

These were all professors in the English Department/Foreign Languages.

LOL !!!

I did the CELTA first, then the USQ MA. This way around was quite handy for preparing lesson plans and other aspects of course work. CELTA makes you far more professional in approach, in my opinion. It also makes for good lesson plans, and the lessons themselves become far more enjoyable. And you are correct, Koreans have no idea what it is. But other countries: Japan / Thailand, Europe almost always ask for it.

I did the CELTA....it was awesome. I have nothing to compare it to as far as teaching qualifications go, but I suspect it is superior to any long, drawn out, expensive American TESOL thingy. its sickening that Asians don't even know what it is.
Getting a Celta is like having a light switched on suddenly..its full of great ideas.

Yeah - this disappoints me too.

I know what we went through to get the CELTA.

I have a feeling if more Asian employers and university hiring committees knew what was involved with teacher training courses like Trinity and CELTA they'd hire the teachers who've done one on the spot.

I guess it's going to take time.

In my experience, Korea, Japan, Taiwan and China DO NOT normally recognize or ask for a CELTA.

European/South American countries do, though, based on what I've read.

Why is it superior to TESOL? What's the difference?

Those CELTA lesson plans took forever. They certainly taught me a few things about approach though. I've never worked in a place where I could possibly have enough prep time to make plans anywhere close to those though unfortunately.

Whats more, CELTA is designed for teaching willing adults. Its been fairly irrelevant to use on the host of indifferent screaming gimchi kids i've force fed English here in korea.

And TESOL doesn't do this?

Mine did.

And my lessons are quite enjoyable.
