Manifestation of ingroup-outgroup theory. I.e., it's easy. |

Yes.
Foreigners do not fit neatly into any scheme. They are normally treated graciously as one would a guest, but they may never be able to break into that close, inner circle. For most Koreans, foreigners exist only as stereotypes, and are not always liked. Living in Korea as a foreigner requires patience and fortitude.

Haven't had it happen in a grocery store, a lines a line and i'd hold my own.
When it has happened to me is in retaurants. When it does i simply stand up, say something and walk out. If I don't like the service, i leave. They are stuck with my order and my money goes elseware (that being said it has only happened twice in years) |

I was at Sandpresso once, I started to talk and she gave me the 'wait a second' thing. Some goof walked in, yelled his order, and got service. She reacted, and then the 2 ladies started looking at each other and talking to each other. They look at me, saw I was pissed oiff, and I walked out.
They chased me out onto the street, and I yelled for them to learn some manners before I would ever come back.
It irks me. There is a lineup for a reason. |

FIRST COME, LAST SERVED... for waygook customers in Korea
How are foreigners treated in Korea?
FIRST COME, LAST SERVED
This happens in stores, restaurants, clinics, and other places.
And, some places never provide service for foreigners. |
I haven't had this happen. At all. Ever.
I have had ajuma come up and plop their groceries down in front of mine, and I push their groceries aside and move forward. It helps that I am taller than any ajuma, and older than a lot of them.
I had to endure a dinner companion, out with a group of us last week, who bitched all during the meal about bad service and her general bad treatment in Korea. The constant griping is worse than bad service ever could be. |

In four years only once. I simply picked his items up and dropped them on the counter behind mine. "I was here first! Wait your turn!"
Rude people are everywhere, not just Korea. |

One should also consider that maybe the person behind the counter just never served a whitey before and maybe was hesitant and scared. |

Yes, that too. They often think they are going to have to speak English and panic. |

I think there's a lot to that, especially for the cashiers who are in junior high or high school still. They seem to think, "If I ignore him, he'll just go away and I won't have to embarass myself by trying to speak English in front of my co-workers. Let me help this friendly familiar Korean face in front of me instead."
By the way, GWoW has a pretty funny rant on the Chinese Off-Topic Board that touches a bit on customer service for foreigners. He really is a strange one. |

Maybe the nervous twitch I have scares people away when I am in a queue, but it has never happened to me. |

thanks. but thats what all the gals say
about all this bs with being frightened to speak english.. ha
what do the koreans do who don't speak english at all? nothing. they speak korean. we still get by. it happens the same amount in those places too.
this is only about the loudest person getting served first and the quietest being served last.
it is our own fault. if we are forward like the koreans, we get served. if we politely wait back until the way is clear or to give other people enough space, we lose out.
get your cash out and get in their face..
it took me ages to get used to this, it really felt terrible but, i started being served faster and to tell the truth... i hardly worry bout it at all these days..
do as they do and you are fine.
edit - this just doesn't happen to foreigners, it happens to koreans too btw.. |
