Man, sitting at a 7-11 drinking?!

I don't know how many times I have passed a group of Koreans doing this and thought how utterly pathetic it is.

Who drinks in front of 7-11s? Nobody I would want to hang with. Seems pretty trashy to me.

Anyways, it happened, and your location was a bit wanting for some piece of loser to join you and start something memorable.

If you drink in your home, this probably wouldn't have happened.

Now you blame Confusionism...wierd connection, man. Rolling Eyes

I don't think drinking in front of a 7-11 is all that bad. If the bars here had patios like they do at home, well I'd drink there instead. I just think that a cold beer outside on a warm summer night is pretty close to bliss, especially when there's something sizzling on a gas grill nearby.

There is a difference between religion and way of life?

Sounds strange to me. I always figured for a really religious person (not a silly churchgoer or follower of a specific sect or any of that nonsene) that religion was the way of life. I am not religious, but I think I can see what it is not.

I guess it depends on your definition of religion. Buddhism does not believe in gods (some varieties do but the Buddha never said he was a god nor that he knew of any that existed). I know of Christians, Jews and Muslims who use Buddhist principles to further the depth of their own faiths.

Anyway, it's really not important. I have nothing against Christians who have found enlightenment through Jesus Christ, but man, the ones who have problems with other religions just really bug me.

I think that th OP meant that the old guy wouldn't have started a fight if he didn't (because of cunfusionism) think he was in the right. He also wouldn't have gotten angrier that the OP spoke to him in banmal if it weren't for confunsionistic ideas of age = supremecy.
So I think it means that if cunfusionism didn't have such a stranglehold on people in Korea this fight wouldn't have happened.

Did I ever suggest that you SHOULD put up with it? All I did was question your theory that his behaviour was connected to Confucianism. But now you seem to be changing the subject, if not putting words into my mouth.

If this is an example of your conversational style, perhaps I can see why you wouldn't be elicting the most charitable repsonses from people you meet at the 7-11.

You just don't get it!!

You should not make any assumptions about how a person is speaking based on the internet. Have you ever met me in person? Tone of voice accounts for a lot.

Also, if you knew anything about you, you would know that this was never intended to be a sociological discussion. I wrote my original post, and then gave it a title. A title that would attract some readers.

Some of the other posters understand the point I was trying to make. Thank you guys for taking your head out of the sand, or never having your head in the sand, possibly. OTOH, it's time for you to follow suit.

The comment about Confusionism being followed improperly; point taken. Sounds like a lot of other religions.

There's nothing wrong with 7-11 drinking. That's what those tables are for, and why they sell beer and snacks inside.

Of course, I have no idea how you were really talking to the guy at the 7-11. Admittedly, my comments about your conversational style were a slightly condescending extrapolation. But the only reason I thought myself called upon to engage you in this way was because you had misrepresented my comments by suggesting that I had said that you should tolerate drunken abuse.

Yes, but a drunk could start a fight in New York because he sees someone walk into a fancy restaurant wearing torn jeans and a t-shirt. Would we use this as the basis to critique dress codes? After all, if dress codes didn't have such a stranglehold on western society, that fight wouldn't have happened.

The problem here is that he thought you guys were some public good to use to impress his babe. He was using you, plain out by sitting down and having an experience with foreigners. I try never to let these situations happen anymore. He is a racist as was so proved by himself, why even try to make his night? The best thing to to ignore the man, he will get the hint or make himself look like an ass trying to get your attention. I don't think you did anything that others in the same situation wouldn't have done.

That's a crap example. Dress codes are common to almost every culture and race. Confusionism isn't. Much of what this old guy did stemmed from it in my op.

I'm severely CONFUSED about the meaning of this thread's title. Does it mean that "beng confused" doesn't work? I beg to differ! I think I am suffering from a bout of "confusionism" right now! Shocked Twisted Evil Rolling Eyes

Laughing

I'm glad someone out there noticed that.

I am no fan of drunken middle-aged Koreans trying to show off their English speachy either.

I do think the OP has a point. The guy figured that because he was older, and a Korean, he should have the right to be a jerk to everyone around him. ( and because Korea is supposed to be a confucian society, people are supposed to sit quietly and take it)

I probably would have punched the guy, but that's just me.

I don't think that this in any way justifies the title of this thread however. The guy was abusing the customs of a confucian society, just as many so-called Christians abuse the rights and privilages given to them.

Can anyone spell Jimmy Swaggart or Catholic Priests, to name a few?

It would have helped the author's ethos to spell the word correctly--Confucianism--but the claim is wrong anyway; Confucianism does work. It can if applied properly. Koreans centuries ago embedded the system so deeply into their culture that they neglected other non-scholarly aspects of civilization, such as the military. This hurt them when it came to the Japs invading the peninsula with Portuguese muskets. The Koreans stood no chance. This, however, should not be taken as indicative of Confucian thought, in and of itself.

For a Western and scholarly work arguing that the basic ethics of Confucianism can and should be incorporated into society, including Western society, please see:
