In another thread people were jumping to the conclusion that because koreans attend single sex middle and high schools they aren't as socially developed as the western peers. I presume that the majority of posters who make such remarks are from North america since the schools that New Zealand parents jump hoops to get into are nearly always single sex. Single sex schooling is also common in Australia and England and I don't think anyone who went to single sex schools is any less socially developed because of it.
The reason that the kids aren't as socially developed is that they have no time to be teenagers as they are too busy studying for the next round of tests. I have never seen a fourteen year old with grey hair in New Zealand but in my classes here, there are usually 5 or 6. Anyway I think that single sex education is a good option for some students (I wouldn't say all) and I don't think that it makes students socially retarted because of the absence of girls/boys. |

I agree with your observation, although I have no data to support it. My support is anecdotal: I teach at a mixed high school and the students there seem to be no more socially developed than the students that go to the gender segregated schools down the road.
It does seems to suggest that the reason the students are less socially developed is because they have less time to develop those social skills. But I could be wrong, it's just my observation. |

I don't know what the deal is in korea, but in New Zealand the single sex schools are (mostly) viewed as being more academically challenging so the types of parents that send their kids there are the 4 hours of sleep is better than failing types. |

| Many schools in the States were single-sex before not too long ago. I happen to think they are a better idea. Students will be able to concentrate on their "studies" if more of them went to single-sex schools. |
