I don't think the OP was out of line at all. Just venting. Perhaps his mistake was thinking such thoughts were welcome. |
Should racist thoughts be welcome? Suppose he had written the exact same post but replaced "Koreans" with "Jews" or "blacks"? |

Or we could even replace 'Koreans' with 'American GIs'
I have a question...Is it racist if his feelings are based on the actions/behavior of Koreans towards him (and America in general) and not upon the race itself? That is, he doesn't dislike Koreans because they are Korean, but because of their treatment of him while he was here. Is it racist? |

| i think it is racism if you are projecting a hate on a whole culture, over a bad experience with a relatively small around of the culture |

With all the anti America protest going on over the years...tell me koreans, why do you continue to go to America? Or enroll in its schools and universities? Or buy its products? The line at the U.S. embassy is LONG everyday with koreans waiting to apply or get visas!
I am not anti korean, but, koreans are sure pushing me toward being anti. |
A buddy of mine works for a rather large company here in Korea. The job he has is pretty high up and pays rather well. One night, he was out with some friends that brought some Koreans with them. One woman, when finding out that he had this job got very angry at him because he was taking a job away from a Korea. When he told me this I found it rather funny. How many Koreans take away university spots from American students in the states (not that I ever really cared but it makes me laugh how one-sided things can be)? He wishes he would of thought of that when confronted with her anger. |

Royjones...man, if anyone should have a beef with Koreans...it should be you
I agree with what you said roy...but I don't think the OP was ticked off because of 'hair flipping'. If he had said, 'Boy, those Koreans with their hair flipping...makes them all look stupid' I think you could make an argument for racism.
My take on his post was that the experience at the Mayflower triggered his memories (still fresh) of being here. I think that his real beef is that Koreans ARE pretty racist and xenophobic themselves not that they flip their hair and talk on cell phones. Koreans make it quite clear that Korea is not for foreigners. I have been told so by an immigration official. The use of the word 'foreigner' by Koreans itself (instead of 'guest' or 'visitor') reinforces our status as outsiders. There are a lot of policies in Korea that are in place to make it hard for foreigners to fit in here. We are discriminated against here in many ways. I think the OP was thinking more along the lines of 'Why should we treat them so well?'. Why shouldn't we (or Americans actually) make it just as hard for them in our country? Why should we buy their stuff when they march in the street against ours? Some call it racism. Some call it an eye for an eye. Come on. It's a natural reaction. You go home from a place that has bars with signs that say "NO AMERICANS" to find a bunch of happy Koreans thouroughly enjoying themselves in your own country, with few if any of the hinderances you faced in theirs...When you point it out...YOU are the racist? I don't think so. |

I agree. But I don't think the incident in the OP has any relation to this, no sympathy. |

Call it what you will, but I still think it is being racist. He or anyone else can justify it anyway they want. There are lots of ethnic people who have said that their actions were not racist. I have met a few koreans, and honestly they have been very nice to me. I have been at a korean bar a few times with friends. Most koreans there were very friendly, came up to chat and everything. I am not saying people dont try to cut in line, and such, but that is not just because i am a foreigner. I think alot of people just say it is. There are other factors. If you are sandering around, they will definately try to pass you. Its part of their culture.
I know I have not gone through the troubles like he did (director) and such. My director is a great guy. He has been nothing but straight forward with me and has gone above and beyond on several occasions. I just dont like judging a culture based on meeting/interacting with a few.
As for buying their products. well, just dont, but just dont judge other people for doing it. It is their right. And lastly .. I am not american, I am Canadian if that matters. I would welcome a korean into canada. |

Just for the record, a person can be "nice" to a foreigner and still be racist. |

You may be right. I am trying to infer something that was not explicitly stated. Maybe I should save my guesswork and ask the OP to post a clarification. |

None of the Koreans on the "Mayflower" treated him badly. But he still disliked them anyway, simply because he was treated badly by other Koreans. So yes it is racist. If you got beaten up by a gang of Koreans here, do you think that gives you a right to go home and with a gang of your friends beat up the first Korean person you see, simply because he/she is Korean? Neither physical or verbal abuse is allowable simply because these people come from the same race.
Anyway what about my question? Would it be all right if the OP had said say "blacks" or "Jews" instead of Koreans. Yes or no? |

Good question. I think I would have still made the same post and asked the same question if he had said 'blacks' or 'Jews' I guess. My question was a sincere one (I wasn't suggesting he was or was not racist)...My question was whether his feelings of dislike towards a group of people were based on the racial characteristics that group of people, or were his feelings based on the poor treatment he received from a group of people who happened to be of the same race? I have said in other threads that 'racist' gets thrown around a lot on this board...it loses its meaning. Geez, I am afraid to say "I don't like kimchee" for fear of being branded a racist.
I took his post as meaning the latter...But, as I have already posted, maybe I was in error there. Perhaps the OP can clarify. |

You are probably right...but I don't want to hear another word about Ohno 'till Roy gets what he has coming to him.
Maybe the speedskater, Kim Dong-sun, could fight Jones...and the winner gets a gold medal? |
