About how much do you think it's possible to max out in a month in Korea? I mean without being able to set up your own 4 or 5 student lessons and make the coveted 100,000 an hour I've heard of in tales. I've gone from 4.0 to 5.7 to 6.6 to 6.9 and I'm making another 6.9 this month. I'm thinking 7.0 is about tops without burning out (yeah, I work Saturdays too). All of my stuff is 35/hr-50/hr...so if you're making the big bucks, how are yah doing it?

Thanks...

And I was wondering how to MIN out, to get free housing and only work two full days a week, back to back, for a million. Is it possible?

hey you can totally min out. you could make 1.6 milion working one day AND GET FREE HOUSING. Put down 2 million key money on a two or three bedroom and you get free rent. Then set 3 privates up on one day and take a once a week job elsewhere. It's crazy, I also thought about taking the opposite route. FLying to Thailand EVERY Friday and coming back thursday, working for a day, and flying out again. This what makes Korea worth being here. I make over 400,000 each Thursday.

2 or 200 million? Where can you get a 3 bedroom apartment for 2 million won key money?

You make group lessons. It takes some time to network, but once the ball is rolling, you can ramp up well.

You quote 50-60/hr for 1 on 1 lessons, but if they want to bring a friend or two in, you will drop it down to 30-35/hr per person. Most people will obviously opt for making it a group.

Best way to maximize this is by having a ι (study room) running out of a 2 bedroom apartment. You use 1 bedroom as your study room and the rest is your living space. I know some guys that operate like this and they do well.

For me, I did the loading up on privates for a year or so, but found it so volatile. Some months 5.0, then some cancellations or schedule conflicts, and a drop down to 4.0. Then ramp up to 6.0-7.0 a few months later, hold that level for a month or two, and then you lose some again and back down to 5.0-6.0, etc...The routine requires constant maintenance and networking for new privates. That tires me out more than the teaching workload.

For now, I'm opting to go the way of reliable, predictable earnings for awhile, and am signing for 4.0/mnth with a corporate gig. It's 9-5 work in a fun environment, albeit a lower revenue than maxing on privates. But I still have my evenings and weekends off, so if I ever have a yearning to max out again, I've got some primetime schedule openings. Smile

I work two days a week - 7-9 am and 2-4 pm., plus one 2-4 class on a third day. This gets me to 2,000.000 a month. Mind you, the morning classes - one of them is a company job at 100,000 an hour. I also pay my own rent, though. If I hadn't lucked into the lucrative morning thing, I would have to work more. Oh, and I have reported and pay taxes on it as well. (I'm on a family visa).

For me, after working like a dog for 7 years in the hogwan business, ( my uni hogwon recently closed putting all of us long-termers out of a very well-paying job), it's nice to have more time to do things like work on my MA, try to get my health back up to speed, and do some writing.

Whoa, how'd you get a company job at 100,000/hr? I have a 2 hr company job at 35,000/hr. It bites. 3 different classes I have to prepare for too, it's not just one class.

It was a fluke - I didn't even negotiate, they just offered the class at 100,000/hr. But seriously, I don't do company classes for less than 50,000. I think that 35,000 is too low. Did you get that one through an agent? I notice the agent-advertised company jobs are in the 35,000-40,000 range but the student is probably paying 50-60,000.

Two observations.

1- It is quite sad and speaks volumes that the well being of students and the educationnal objectives are almost completely absent here, having been replaced by maxing out your earnings as if your students were just paychecks.

2- The B.S. factor in this thread is also reaching new heights....high income money claims have been around for a while and in most of the cases they are just people blowing smoke.

Man, even Shakespeare wrote for money.

Not that I think anybody around here is educational equivalent of old Will. . .

It's not terribly preposterous if you do some simple math.

An average rate of 30,000/hr on a 40 hr week is 4.8 million Won/mnth. If you tweak that rate, add some group lessons and use some simple salesmanship to get your avg. rate up to 40-50,000/hr, then you're making no small amount of change.

Believe me, there are lots of things going on like this, in this country. I've done it, seen it, hang with others that are doing it now. Just because you're not seeing it, doesn't mean that it's not happening.

So it is sometimes said. Doubtful, though, when he writes lines like: "He is well paid that is well satisfied."

Shakespeare was a huge plagarist. I am insulted! And it's beneath you to think so. Before the American self-esteem movement William wrote: "Men at some time are masters of their fates: The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, But in ourselves, that we are underlings."
