I'm having a hell time starting up my computer. It reboots itself 10 -20 times before finally starting up. Does this sound like a familiar virus and if so is there a way to fix it? Thanks

Sounds like a few things....heat, power, a virus...

Do you have an AV program? Did you do a system scan?
Does it cold boot or go through the shutdown sequence?
What did you do before this began? Did you open any e-mail attatchments?

System specs, including power supply would be helpful.

i think we're on the same page here demo [correct me if im wrong]- while there's a chance it could be a virus it's more likely that it's some sort of hardware failure...

Yeah...totally. Whenever you get random reboots, suspect hardware first.

By default when WinXP encounters a system failure, it reboots without warning. The setting that controls this can be changed:

Control Panel/System/Advanced/Settings (Startup & Recovery)/System Failure/Uncheck-Automatically Restart. To view the event log: Admistrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/eventvwr.

Windows XP Events and Errors
Enter the message source and ID in the text field, then click "Go"

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/support/ee.asp

This will however give a kind of typical, unnerving, cryptic message....something about needing hard drive space or something....if you do have a large hard drive, then just go ahead.

At least you can read what happened to cause the crash.

Or, Go to McAfree.com- http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ -and download "Stinger.exe", it is a free virus bot program. Run it and see.

Thanks for the above links - I'll use them to do a better job of protecting my computer from viruses. I took the machine to Yongsan today and it was diagnosed as a virus.
