Thanks Snuf (and Gord, Dalton, and Demo).
Just wanted to note that we found the quality of the Xvid files of DaeJangGum that are floating around the internet to be stunning. |

Anyways, lots of programmes will not make the conversion unless you have a DVD-rw drive as the conversion will go directly to disc. I have always gotten by with the DivX by just burning the avi file on an archive formatted disc. Who needs the autoplay?
Now if you want the subtitles and other stuff included in your DivX video (before you burn with your DVD-rw), that's be a whole other issue, you better read up on VSOB files. I tinkered with this a little and just gave up.
Anyways Doom9.net is the source for this stuff. Though I really can't see why you would bother with this conversion as well. It won't make much difference at all.
By the way, Demo was right, DivX is stripped of a lot of stuff. The subtitles, menus, and tracks are all lost in the conversion. |

Actually, I guess I was wrong altogether. (According to Gord, who seems to be more "in the know" than I)
I believed that the lowered bitrate in the original conversion to an .avi file would make going back to a DVD format undesirable due to the reasons Dalton outlined; The data that was culled from the original DVD couldn't be regained out of thin air, nor did I believe it could be re-created through software.
I still maintain that this is true, and of course as you said, the tracks, subtitles, etc... could also not be regained. I again believed that the ensuing lowered-quality encoding back to DVD format would be a waste of time, as it would be an awful viewing experience.
I was wrong totally in assuming it couldn't be done.
I don't believe however, that watching an .avi file on the TV through a TV-out on the PC is a better experience. I have tried both ways, and enjoy watching movies on my 21", .20DP monitor much more than my 32" TV.
Granted, it's not an HD TV, so perhaps I still am on shakey ground here.
The TV kind of "TV-izes" the movie...makes it look like one would expect from a TV, much as a console game looks. Some prefer the "TV-ishness" of gaming, but not me, nor do I prefer the TV for viewing movies.
The monitor is finer (higher resolution), tighter (finer dot-pitch) and more detailed (because of the aforementioned reasons), in my view. Purely subjective, I guess. |

I'll let you know how it turns out if I ever get around to doing it- once again this pet project has been put back-burner. Since i set up a LAN and a computer for her sole use my wife doesn't seem to mind watching her Korean TV shows on pc anymore; Maybe it was me with all my "When's the show over? I want to play games!" Didn't help that she wanted to watch 3 or 4 episodes in a row... |
