There is some thing nice about being out and drinking a beer and having a korean pop song you like in the playing in the back ground. Kinds of lets you know that this IS korea and not elsewhere. Sure some of it isn't wonderful, it isn't all bad. Don't close yourself off to it. It helps you relate to your students and society better or at least I have found.

This is about my least favourite Korean band, at least until they manufacture a worse one.

You have to remember that commercial pop music these days, in all countries, is targeted at the under 18's.

Us old folk (i.e. over 18's) are not meant to like it!!!

i stand corrected

i was in the cd store in COEX today and realized that the band l'arc-en-ciel was actually japanese.

too good to be true, something truly original yet still reverent to the greats of rock 'n' roll coming out of korea...

As a rule I find Korean Pop to be terrible and express this opinion freely with my students. It's unbelievable that the Korean Pop scene hasn't changed much since '96 when H.O.T. (Homo's On Tv) came out. I know Western Pop isn't all that much better at times but there are far more different styles of Pop (Barenaked Ladies). Also there are far more alternatives back home for those who don't like Pop.
The only Korean bands I like are Crying Nut and Cherry Filter.

That's another thing - even their names are the same. How many Korean pop bands have three letter names like 'G.O.D.' and 'H.O.T.' and 'N.R.G.' No matter - in the end they all sound like 'A.S.S.'

Its pretty average.

The problem here is the songs lack substance and originality, they are all so follow the leader and samey and people are afraid to do something different.

Occasionally a singer will pop out but not often.

The J-pop scene on the other hand is pretty awesome. If only Koreans could look across the water and incorporate it into their music stylde.

Ha ha, good topic. I heard some shockingly terrible k-pop today and the male singing voice sounded like Stevie Wonder. So is Korea in the seventies?

I'm definitely not a fan of the mushy love crap that is always coming out, nor do I like the girly-boy bands, however, some of the other pop music is pretty good.

I like Diva and Baby Vox, along with Lee, Hyo-Ri, for the most part. But, maybe it is just that I like to watch the videos as I'm a dirty old dog!!!

The Korean pop music scene is a lot like a lot of other music scenes all over the world. There is the highly publicised and played music that all the kids like with an occasional infusion of something worth listening to. There is always more original, sophisticated, and enjoyable music that is never played on the radio or video programmes as well. I am personally a sucker for the the Best of Korean 80's. My wife finds that pretty amusing.

That's the funny thing about Korean music. I often turn on the tv and think "wow, this music is really bad, this is terrible. What wretched music." and then find that I've watched the whole thing...the expection would be the male bands, I can't stand them.

To be honest though I don't think the scene is going to change due to a number of reasons. I think there are about ten reasons for it, yeah, about ten. Take those away and it might change.

Korea had quite an active punk/punk-rock scene for a while. There was an international documentary on it, forget the title tho.

Of course, image sells the records, which makes the money. Who gives a rats arse if music is good? If it looks good, people will buy. That's the consumer at work right there.. :)

jae.
