It used to be the case back in '96 and '97, but Itaewon has cleaned up its act quite a bit, though still patrolled jointly by local authorities and imperial troops (MPs). Still has the Mos Eisley function as a hub for foreigners, but it has been sanitized considerably. (Makes me think of the Star Wars anniversary realease where Han Solo pops Greedo in self defence, instead of giving him the preemptive blast I recall from the original version. Grrr.)

Itaewon is no less seedy than it was in 2001, although the hordes of GI's on the hill no longer exist. It's toned down, but it's still a great place to get into a fight. If that's what you want, go there. Sometimes, I do.

speaking of...what are the sketchiest foreigner areas you've been to?

I'll throw the obvious Texas Town in Busan and Kao Sahn Road in Bangkok out there to get it started...it's a man...babbbbaaay
