Now, there's nothing wrong with being poor, so long as you have a strong work ethic and aren't simply lazy or a drunk/drug-addict. That said, these are the things that make me feel poor, living in Korea:

- using toilet paper as napkins AND paper towels, when I'm not using it to wipe my butt, that is.

- I have no clothes dryer. Clothes dryers are considered a luxury item.

- I have no car. I'm a bus jockey.

- I have no a/c. No matter how hot I get, I tell myself I can make it through this summer and buy one next year. I said the exact same thing last year.

- Half my socks have holes in them. One thing Korean socks are not known for, in my opinion, is their outstanding quality.

- Occassionally, I have to kill a roach (last year: 3, this year: none, so far).

- My windows are fronted with metal bars. My name is Luka, and I live on the 2nd floor.

- I have no vacuum. Wifey likes picking up hair and crumbs with a roll of sticky tape. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

- I feel guilty when I flush t.p. down the crapper.

- Sometimes, if I wake up between 4 and 5 am, I can hear stray cats fighting/copulating.

- Furniture missing from our apartment: bed, sofa, comfortable chair(s), dining table, decent fridge, etc. I'm moving next May; it's reasonable to put off these purchases until after then, right?

I would feel poor if I wasn't in such swank surroundings. They have dryers in the laundry room! And a dry-cleaning service inside the building! And I've still got a dinky little washing machine in my room. Combined with a bidet toilet, a massive refrigerator, and a big window that looks down upon the world, it's hard to feel like anything other than the king of Sunae.

I made the right decision.

Busing it or taxiing it makes me feel poor especially after I see my students in front of the dorm with 20 million won cars.. Ah, and living in a dorm makes me feel poor... wish I had a real apartment. Knowing that most Korean men my age and with the same education are making 50% to 100% more than me a month also makes me feel poor.

C'mon Sparkles, get some damn furniture. Yongsan second hand store, next to the USO between Namyeong and Samgakji station. They deliver.

Why Ryan is poor:

I have one room
I have no cable tv
I have no car
I hang my clothes to dry on my gas pipes
I have no A/C or fans
Someone else pays for my housing
I ride the bus every day
My cat's litter box is just a big plastic bin I cut a whole in the side of... and I've recently switched from litter to grass. It's free and just as effective.
I own exactly 6 pairs of socks
Contents of my fridge: two lemon sojus, a Cass, a Coke, and a block of cheese
I get annoyed paying 1500 for dakbokki when a stand 4 blocks away has it for 1400

My name is Luka
I live on the second floor
I live upstairs from you
Yes I think you've seen me before

If you hear something late at night
Some kind of trouble. some kind of fight
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was

I think it's because I'm clumsy
I try not to talk too loud
Maybe it's because I'm crazy
I try not to act too proud

They only hit until you cry
And after that you don't ask why
You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore

Yes I think I'm okay
I walked into the door again
Well, if you ask that's what I'll say
And it's not your business anyway
I guess I'd like to be alone
With nothing broken, nothing thrown

Just don't ask me how I am

Dude, when I move next year I am so splurging on everything. This I promise the gods of IKEA.

Phase everything in gradually. That way, you won't notice any significant dents in your budget all at one time.

Yea, you just always don't have money.

What? Piss across my apartment? You'd have a chopstick shoved up your snausage if you'd accomplished that! Maybe you did it in the taxi, but the world will never know...

I think I'd enjoy my purchases a lot less that way, though.

But when I put that big-ass fountain with a globe reading "The World Is Mine" in the entryway...that's when you know it's on.
