It's not really annoying...you dont get it....there are no vegetarians here...so why should they try and get your 'odd' eating habits.

Stop making fun of apologists. They're people too.

(Nice satire, though. Wink)

As a vegetarian, I think waggo is 100% correct. There really aren't vegetarians here (excluding us foreigners), so it's really a foreign issue to them (no pun intended). They don't know why someone would be a vegetarian, and that's just how it is. It's a little more work on our part, but once you can say "no meat and no ham and no fish and no oddaeng and no..." you'll be okay. Wink

I've met vegetarians here. Even people who won't eat dairy products. As for those who say Korea has no culinary imagination, I ask you to go to a bookstore and pick up any cookbook. There are lots of very good ideas in there from traditional Korean foods, to Western foods, to dishes wholly new to me. And if you think Korea's menus are bland, try going to my homeland of Newfoundland. Every restaurant has pork chops, fish, mashed potatoes, or french fries. And not much more.

Sometimes I wonder if peoples' ideas about Korea are limited by the amount of Korean they can speak. Once you learn Korean the country seems very different.

I would tend to agree that the culinary variety in Korea is quite limited. How many dishes are flavored with the same few ingredients? How many dishes to you see flavored with hot peppers or hot pepper sauce? If you take away all the dishes flavored with gochujang, dwenjjang, or kimchi, you're not left with much.

Also look at the lack of restaurants serving food from other countries. Outside of Itaewon it's tough to find a non-korean restaurant. Go the the supermarket, it's tough to find any ingredients imported from other countries. Many places don't even sell any herbs (oregano, basil, parsley, etc) let alone red onions, cauliflower, cheese and dairy products, etc.

You can also consider the food preparation. An aweful lot of cooking is done on a two-burner stove in Korea. That in itself is vey limiting.

Their lack of understanding of vegetarians, and lack of culinary variety are a direct reflection of their culture.

Vegetarian Foreigner: Would you walk into your bedroom wearing large boots?

Korean: (Shocked expression) No!!

Vegetarian Foreigner: Then I would never eat these meats. It would be just as bad and against my customs. (Hands over a list)

Try it.

I like eisbein. Am I wrong for liking lots of meat? I don't eat fruit yet I look healthier than any vegan or pommie that I've ever had the misfortune of encountering.

No Vegetarians in Korea? You've never been to a buddhist temple, have you? Ask your students about (temple food) sometime. It's pure vegan. If you get really frustrated, tell them that you follow a strict buddhist diet. (N.B. not all branches of buddhism are vegetarian, but the most common one in Korea is)
