Into the school he comes, bag in hand (ok partially dragging on the floor) and eyes cast downward. He moves at the pace of a sloth and all the other kids pay him no mind. Watching him walking with the other kids is like watching a stone in a river, it just doenst seem like he's going anywhere.

He is Lethargic Jason and he has a few problems. I taught him for a year and he has "went through" a number of other teachers. Right now he is studying English Time 1 but he has done Lets Go 1 (two time) and Phonics (a number of times). He is in grade 6 and is quite large. Although not "really fat" he stands out among the others at his level. His most outstanding feature is his eyes. He has the saddest eyes that you could imagine. If your dog had just been run over and your wife ran off with the mail man while listening to country music you would still not compare to this boys apparant despair.

I'm not sure why i'm writing about Jason, I don't even teach him anymore (he's left our school a number of times but always comes back.. maybe feels comfortable there??) but the thing is... he has a problem and its not being addressed. Some students go through sad periods and some are (simply put) slow. But he is different.. he is the exteme of both. It strikes me that he must muster ALL HIS ENERGY to simply mouth "I'm fine".

I do not have the expertise to recomend medication to anyone and i'm the first person to say "have you tried this...??" but I fear this boy is in some serious need of help and he's just not getting it.

Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad

Yeah...sometimes the care one has for some kids really makes one want to get into psychology just to reach out and help.

Maybe he has some problems at home, at school or perhaps he just has an artist's temprement?

Take him out for ice cream or to kick the ball around one afternoon...he would probably dig on that....

Yeah, I think thats a good idea. I tried really hard when I was teaching him and tried a number of approaches...thing is though, he just doesnt move. I fear if I threw/kicked a ball at him it would just bounce off (actually come to think of it I tried to play catch with him a few times and by the time he lifted his hand the ball had already fallen).
