I read the FAQ threads and still can't figure out what a girl should wear to teach...

so, if you were in Canada right now, what stores would you go to buy your teaching clothes in? what would you buy? what styles to avoid? what will i not think to buy that i should?

thanks!

Conservative is best. Low riders showing your thong might not be a great idea. Think "what would a Microsoft project manager wear?" And be prepared to dress like that. Raid the Gap.

Things that might be frowned upon:

tank tops--esp. strappy ones
low-cut shirts
super-tight shirts
shorts that do not come halfway down your thigh
low-waist jeans that would expose your mid-drift

Good ideas for teaching clothing:
khakis
black dress pants
skirts
blouses
button-up shirts
sweaters
jeans (this is fine at my school, though some don't like teachers wearing jeans)
knit tops

Thinking "gap" is a good idea. Dressy casual is usually good enough for most schools, many of them are fine with jeans and t-shirts (mine) and very few ask for skirts and blazers, though a skirt or two might be nice for variety.

Depends on where you're teaching really, but I bought most of my work clothes at Reitmans and places like that. Think business casual. I live in light skirts in summer- they don't wrinkle so much and they feel cooler than shorts, that and a dressy T shirt look fine.

Sleeveless shirts are a gray area- a showing bra strap is a big nono in class, as is showing midriff when teaching kids. (with adults it's just a little embarassing). Rule of thumb: If you'd wear it clubbing- don't wear it to class.

Stock up on bras and undies cause chances are you can't get them in your size here. Maybe shoes too- if you're over a size 8, or like shoes that aren't pointy

When you meet the director at the airport, make sure that you wear this:

Just so they can spot you better.

Wear this in your classes:

"I'm going crazy!"
Just to keep the kids on a nervous edge.

When you go out on the town, wear this:

"I want a Korean boyfriend"

Follow the above strict dress code and you will do fine. Smile

me too! Cool

That way they won't have to stare at me to figure out I'm a wae-gook. They can just read the shirt and move on!

chronic---hook us up with the shirts!

You can buy them here.

And considering my wants to break up with me over my upcoming move to Seoul, I might have to get my hands on this:

At most schools as a waeguk teacher you can pretty much get away with wearing what ever you want.

It comes down to weither you want to look like a professional teacher or not.

Me, I wear dress shoes, slacks, dress shirts, and sometimes a tie. Most of my co-workers wear jeans and faded t-shirts. All the more power to them; nothing wrong with that.

One thing of note, though, is that the kids will will respect you more (and be easier to control) if you dress like a proper teacher.

For the guys, I would avoid wearing this t-shirt around town if you don't want to be threatened\beaten up on a regular basis.

Instead, I'd wear my 'All Korean men are mama's boys' tee.

(Waits on couch for print shop to deliver 'But, you wouldn't hit your mom, now would you?' tee.)

Thanks, OP! Very Happy I'm arriving this August and I had the same question.

I tend to dress much like Corporal's avatar at work. Would this be acceptable for teaching in Korea? (My main concern is the boots.)

What do boys wear to teach? Suits? Casual? I don't know.

Did you ask the school if they have a dress code? The school you will be working for can probably give you the most accurate info for this question.
