| Just so you know, they never sent me a copy of the "policy book" that the contract keeps referring to. |

Since a school/uni can't be judged solely on a contract, how did the rest of the gig look? Schedule? Materials? Ages of students? How far is the apartment from the uni? How many foreign teachers? When you spoke to another foreign teacher there, what did they say about the gig and accommodations? What did they say about some of your concerns about housing deposits and airfare reimbursement? What did the past teacher that worked there say about the gig? What did they say about some of your concerns about housing deposits and airfare reimbursement?
If you turned it down solely on the contract wording, without being thorough in qualifying the school/uni with questions like the above, then you're going about this all wrong and may be headed for trouble. Like when a stellar contract turns up, but behind the facade lies hell. |

Schedule was fine. I had an email exchange with one teacher who said mostly positive things about the place. Normally, I wouldn't worry too much about the contract with a school this size because I know that the contract terms that worried me the most can be taken up with the Ministry of Labor 뵿 if they become real problems. The most significant reason for my decision was that I discovered, after receiving the contract, that the school is on several blacklists and there have been some negative postings about it here on Dave's. I take anything that I read on the internet with a big grain of salt. However, the combination of negative postings and a sloppy contract made me feel very nervous. Since I'm not in a hurry to find a job, I decided that it would be better to wait and look around some more.
Still, I see your point and thank you. You're probably right about me taking too hard-nosed of a stand with contracts in Korea. I'd love to get more advice from you. |

Another head's up- the blacklists are about as crooked and misleading than the school's they condemn, if not moreso. Take this for example:

And frankly, stay away from the negative stuff on Dave's and elsewhere. You're only hearing one side of the story from a completely anonymous person that we are hoping that they are being uncompromisingly honest in their testimony. God forbid that you'd ever hear someone say, 'Yeah, this director did this and that and made me do this, but...you know, I suppose that I may have aggravated the situation by behaving like this and saying that and doing this....' Get in the habit of questioning the hell out of any teacher's rant on here about a school. Force them to be completely forthcoming about everything. Most cases, they won't elaborate or respond to your queries, altogether. And then that'll be your answer.
Thoroughly checking the school's reference's (current and past teachers) and trusting your gut are 500 times more likely to yield better results for you, than the online testimonies that have more holes in them than swiss cheese.
As part of my job, I deal with contracts and schools everyday. PM me if you want me to give you a second opinion on something that you've been offered. |
