| You're griping about working 30 hours a week. There are people out there who work twice that much for half the pay. Suck it up. |

It's not working 30 hours, it's teaching 30 hours. It adds up to a lot more work than 30 hours per week.
If some people want to work for next to nothing, that's their problem. |

That's too many.
I do twenty forty minute classes per week. One day I have three, but another day I have five. The day with five is HELL. |
5 classes in a day is hell? Bloody hell, I do up to 8 classes in a day (8 on MWF, 6 on TR) but I love it. Of course, 2 classes on each MWF and 4 on TR are 'special classes' which means we play games, read a book, listen to music and sing, etc. But I love my schedule! I even have a 2-hour break for lunch! The horror! Split shifts and 36 classes per week! How do I ever survive!?!
They're all 40 minutes, so it doesn't break down into less time for review games, etc. like mentioned above, it just means you cover less material each class which is better anyway! At my old hagwon, I used to cover about 3 pages per day, in a 50 minute class. Now (at Wonderland!) I do a page a day, maybe 2 if it's a short page, and that's it! The kids do better I think, plus they're happier as it seems like the day is short.
Oh well, I love my schedule, and I could care less if you all think I'm stupid for liking it.
And back to the original post, 40 classes does seem a bit high if you have to make different lesson plans for each class. But my 36 is easy as I plan it all out in a block for each month (takes about an hour), and maybe adjust as necessary on the fly!

My classes have thirty students each, and I must make six to seven good lesson plans per week. It's amazing how quickly a class flops if not properly planned with thirty students.
I would enjoy your schedule I think kprrok. Small numbers, and no planning. That's cool.
I do prefer to be out of the classroom for most of the day though.
I must say that if someone is to do 40 classes per week they had better be not doing much planning at all, cause it will burn them out. |

| I don't think thats too bad at all I teach the same, and still I'm teaching less time than I would be teaching at a high school back home. Generally a teacher at home works about 38hrs a week, counting class preparation and the usual teaching takes up about 26-28hrs a week. Although I do hope that you're getting alot of overtime for it!!!! |

Now I see why you don't like 5 classes a day. I wouldn't like 1 class per day with that many students! Much less 5! My biggest class (that I actually teach rather than do special activities) is 8 students. So I got it easy. Plus the great thing is that the way my schedule is set, I get a snack (usually a pastry, apple, banana or the like with milk) and lunch everyday at my hagwon! Granted, it's not the best meal, but it saves me a fair bit of change.

The standard hakwon deal is teaching/working for thirty hours. Just because some hakwons don't ask their teachers to do that much doesn't mean ALL hakwons should. |

Of course hagwons shouldn't work their teachers less.
It would cut into their profit or raise tuition, and maybe make a teacher stay longer than a year or so.
This would undermine the sole purpose of hagwons, which is to give parents a new white face as often as possible for the lowest possible price. |

It's called Burger King at roughly 50 hours a week for minimum wage, in buttf*** nowhere, Canada. I'm grateful for the opportunity I've got here. |

Well if you are willing to compare Burger King burger flipping to teaching English in a foriegn country I say okay. I also say WHAT
Lets see mind numbing repetitive no brain work being compared to having to think, plan and implement lessons that will help students grasp a foriegn language.
I see your point
Yes teaching for a relatively decent wage with all the perks thrown in is better than any fast food job. But to work 40+ hours a week for the 'relatively' decent pay is not smart.
My next gig pays 2.4 for 22 hours a week(thats 22 fifty minute classes) I am expected to be there 40 hours a week but they at least recognize that you need to prepare for the classes to do a good job. I am so looking forward to getting out of hogwan hell. |

Thinking, planning and implementing lessons that help students grasp a foreign language? You have to do that at your school?
I rank hagwon work as being closer to that "mind numbing repetitive no brain work" thing you mentioned. Let's not kid ourselves. Teaching english is secondary to looking handsome/pretty enough to wow the parents. You seem to be a dedicated teacher so I'm glad to hear you're moving on. If I had the desire to be a professional, serious teacher, I'd have quit this hagwon shite months ago.
When I said I was thankful for this opportunity I've been given, the opportunity I was referring to was the opportunity to get paid more money than what I'm worth. At least once a day I wonder if my boss is aware of what he pays me. I'd consider myself to be a pretty half-assed teacher, but the kids seem to love me and the parents love me and my boss loves me, so in Korean hogwan terms, I'm the greatest teacher in the ROK. And if I were home, I may have a job that's a little more relevant to my uni degree, but I'd be living like a poor person and not having nearly as much fun.
Frankly, I think this whole hagwon operation is one big dog-and-pony show that works in our favor. So I've got nothing to complain about.
Bottom's up! |

I whole heartedly agree with the dog and pony show idiom.
One of the reasons we are here is to be the white face in the classroom. Not because of our teaching skills. Hogwans are not real schools they are just cash machines for the owners. Some actually try to teach their students properly but most are too afraid about losing a student to actually put any stress/preassure on them.
Kind of ticks me off which is why I am glad to be moving on to a public school gig. I just hope it doesnt turn into more of the same thing |
