I guess I'll be getting around to taking the Opera browser for a spin...
(Downloaded it some time ago but never bothered to install it).

US CERT (the US Computer Emergency Readiness Team), is advising people to ditch Internet Explorer and use a different browser after the latest security vulnerability in the software was exposed.
A statement on the CERT site said: "There are a number of significant vulnerabilities in technologies relating to the IE domain/zone security model, the DHTML object model, MIME type determination, and ActiveX. It is possible to reduce exposure to these vulnerabilities by using a different web browser, especially when browsing untrusted sites." CERT otherwise recommends users to set security settings to high and disable JavaScript
Malicious code, dubbed variously as "Scob" or "Download.Ject", originally posted last week on a Russian website, could be downloaded secretly onto websites using Microsoft's Internet Information Server 5.0. The code could then be used to log keystrokes made by visitors to the site - so long as they used Internet Explorer as their browser. Information, including passwords, was then to be emailed to the criminals behind the atack.
Microsoft said that it was unaware of widespread consumer impact and noted that the Russian site had been taken offline. It said some enterprise users of Windows 2000 Server, specifically users running IIS 5.0, were being targeted by "Download.Ject". According to MS, this is not a trojan or worm but "a targeted manual attack by individuals or entities towards a specific server". It said users should use a firewall, ensure they have the latest software updates and use anti-virus software.
Bill Gates, Microsoft chairman, called on users to switch on auto-update so that patches would spread faster. Speaking to Reuters in Australia at the weekend, he vowed to "guarantee that the average time to fix will come down. The thing we have to do is not only get these patches done very quickly...we also have to convince people to turn on auto-update."��

I throw myself on the mercy of the computer experts.
Which browser should I be using? Bear in mind that I have a really, really slow learning curve on any software produced after the early 90's. (Stupid, stupid Windows. It all made sense before then.)  |

There's a list of browsers at this link with user ratings.

I'm using Mozilla Firefox. Frre and open source. It was a fast download, fast install, it just took all the settings from IE. Really it was less than a minute to install. It looks and feels like IE except it seems to be faster and sites look cleaner. It has skins and interesting 'extensions' which are little 10-50 kb files that add functionality to the browser.
I liked the sound of Opera but the free version is supported by adware and I don't like that. |

Thanks for the tip, Dalton, but I didn't have much luck with Mozilla Firefox.  The download and install weren't a problem, but when I tried to import the IE stuff, the program kept crashing. I uninstalled, rebooted, re-installed...same problem. Too bad...was looking forward to trying something new....*sigh*

| That's too bad. I installed it with no problems on two pc's this weekend. Try something else on the list and give us your opinion of it. Avante is the most popular one. Search for ZDNet. They are a European cousin of C-Net and have a different list of browsers. |

One step ahead of you....  I moved on to Mozilla 1.7, which just feels like Netscape to me. Ironically, I started browsing the web years ago with Netscape and switched to I.E. later on (go figure!). The biggest problem I have with Mozilla is I already miss my Google Toolbar. I downloaded the Mozilla equivelant, but it's not quite the same, doesn't have as many functions, and is missing the ones I use the most (autocomplete and highlight). May try it out for a few more days until I go on vacation, but I'm a bit skeptical. Change is always hard.....guess we'll have to wait and see.

Sitck with Mozilla. The features of IE is what keeps people from converting....it's like a drug. I don't use "Firefox", I use the straight Mozilla 1.6, but didn't install the news and chat features.
I miss the "Favorites" at the side of the browser window...I have a heck of a lot of links and a 21" monitor...lots of real estate there to have the favorites column open all the time. (Used to hog my browser window with a 17" monitor...I hate side scrolling) Mozilla has a drop-down menu that at least imports my IE favorites, but not as convenient as IE.
Soon Mozilla will be feeling like home...just keep using it....IE is the most dangerous program in Windows. |

| I keep hearing horror stories regarding firefox. I'd stick with Mozilla 1.6. The tabbed browsing is a miracle. A miracle I tells ya. And it blocks pop ups. |

That, I've figured out. I downloaded the newest version, 1.7, last night. I imported my IE favorites, and then under "Manage Bookmarks", I just dumped the content of my "����" folder into "Personal Toolbar Folder" (same thing), and then delelted all the other crap bookmarks that were installed with the program. Then I configured the "sidebar" so that "Bookmarks" is the first thing on the Sidebar, and voila!...bookmarks, just like in IE, at my disposal on the left.
PS - I did manage to find another version of the Google Bar that is closer to the one in IE, so I'm a bit happier.

| I like Mozilla 1.6, seems more stable than IE... and Firefox is alright but I think I'll wait til it goes 1.0 before I give it a good look. |

Hmmmm....had no problem installing Firefox on my computer at work. However, as I hand in my gradebook on Thursday, I won't be coming into the office that often for the next couple of months. I'll have to try and install Firefox again at home tonight. Firefox seems to be a nice hybrid of IE and Mozilla. I'm intrigued, but still miss the "full-on" Google Toolbar.
