This is something I've been discussing with friends for the last year or so.

Many people see spending time in Korea as a way of staving off entering the 9 to 5 mainstream and keeping up with the Joneses and their 1.6 squalling brats.

However, of all the people I know back home there is absolutely nobody (nobody nobody nobody) that I would change places with. I save more money than many of my friends (not all) and I have way more holiday time than they do.

For most of friends back home their idea of a holiday is going to Club Med for a week I think that's just pathetic.

I guess Korea is an escape from the reality of back home but I don't see my 5 months vacation and ability to save over 50% of my salary as something I'd trade for the reality of a career back home in which a pathetic two-week holiday, going to the cottage on weekends, and going to barbecues with people wearing socks with sandals listening to bawling of the brats punctuated by parents giving them mild admonishments to play nice as a desirable thing.

Anyone from Canada? I think my friendly neighborhood Korean Consulate is 2 provinces away. What do I do then?

I'm from Canada, and I'll answer th questions straight. In order to get the E-2 visa, you have to get your passport stamped at a Korean consulate outside of Korea. Usually teachers pick up the cost of the visa stamp, and it's $75.00 Canadian.

You bring the blue paper, which they'll send you, your passport, and an extra passport photo to the consulate. Fill out the visa application form, and they'll get it back to you the next day.

If the consulate is two provinces away, then ask the school to arrange for you to stop over in the city with one on the way, its as simple as that.

You're not the only one. No one comes to Korea for clean air and blue skies. I enjoy myself here and I'm glad I came, but I originally came for money and that's it. I don't believe anyone who says otherwise.

we didn't come here for money.

1. my son wasn't learning korean in the states.
2. his (korean) grandma and a slew of big brothers and sisters (cousins) who adore him are here.
3. i got sick of doing it all. in korea i benefit from the kind of family support that is unheard of in my own (american) family.
4. i can easily find work teaching; an advantage yes, but not the reason we're here.

Okay, then - Korean family ties not included, the only reason is money. If I wanted an 'adventure' I could think of 50 other countries I'd visit first.

Think about it, do you really want to put your passport in the mail?

Tell the school either to change the flight to vancouver or plan on sending you to japan.

I'd rather be in Italy, Brazil, or Thailand, but I prefered to get paid well and have an adventure ...

You can always courier it. That's what I did way-back-when, when I was getting my very first visa. That'll add a couple of extra days on to the process, though.

I think CanadaPost also has an overnight, registered delivery service with prepaid envelopes. You can just send it to the Embassy, and include an extra pre-paid self-addressed envelope, so you don't have to worry about arranging courier pickup from the Embassy.

Yes just mail it, its routine. Go courier or deluxe mail & provide for similar return service. Phone the embassy & put your mind at ease.

Adventure & excitement -- hold that thought.

There is no escaping reality, but it has a different edge here.
