Apologies for the wait. Smile

This is my last official act as a Dave's ESL moderator, and it's a pleasant one... !

It's an honour to announce the winners of the first ever Dave's ESL Photo Contest. I'd like to thank everyone who participated, whether by contributing photos, adding their comments here and on the photo gallery site, and also the team of judges.

The judges commented on the difficult task they had, as there were so many excellent entries. I'll add some of the judges' comments a little later.

As I'm leaving Korea in a few weeks - forever - and the server in my office where the photos are hosted will be unplugged soon, I'll try to look for a more permanent home for them, but they may disappear from here soon, hopefully only temporarily. For now, please enjoy the winners, and all of the entries on the gallery.

Here are the winners. Note that these are reduced-size versions, and larger versions appear on the gallery site:

THIRD PRIZE
Korea Newfie
Bupyeong Underground Market
"One for every day of the week."

SECOND PRIZE (TIE)

"Summer, 2003. It was a beautiful day, and you could see all the way to Sockcho and the beach."

WOW!!! Little ol' me?!? When I read about this photo contest 3 months ago, I had to submit some pictures, because I'm the girl who always has a camera on hand. I submitted some photos back then, and forgot about them until receiving a congratulatory email from Lemon today. It was SUCH a surprise! The last major thing I won was an Easter coloring contest in the 5th grade.

There were so many great pictures that I thought were better or more artistic than mine. Therefore, I'm just happy to be in the company of talented photographers. THANKS! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Once again, thanks to The Lemon for taking time to set this up!

And once more, a very big thanks to Lemon and the judges.

PS Can the participants say who theyd've picked?

I didn't look to see who took the pictures until after choosing, but I especially liked two:

1) Indytruck's Buddha photo - simple, beautiful, and poignant
2) Mercer Cheese's 2nd place picture - I like the composition, angles, and how the roof tops barely touch the building.

Great job!

There were a bunch that I thought were better than mine, but I'm not going to point them out... Embarassed

I've had a crappy time lately with my school, but this has made me feel better. Like the Lemon, I'm leaving Korea for good in 11 days, and this is definitely a good note to leave on. Thanks all.

And thanks Lemon for the great idea, and all the work that went into it. It's been great participating.

If there's one thing I saw with all these pics, it's that many people here are capable of taking professional-looking pics. I only recently got into photography as an official hobby, and this is very encouraging for me. I hope everybody else got something out of it as well.

Again, thank you, and good night. Er, good afternoon...

Who were the judges by the way?

Ulsanchris,

Your farmer in the rice field was the best of the lot IMHO.

I really like Newf's shoes pic too, but it didn't have the "Korean-ness" that I thought the pictures were supposed to represent.

I'll give one name- Dave Sperling - as I already named him. There were a few moderators but most were users who have strengths in the visual arts. I also added a couple of "regular" high-profile users to round out the team. But I promised the judges their contributions and identities would be confidential, so I'm afraid I can't give a list.

I had the same thought. But some judges strongly supported the photo, saying that the style/color of sneaker is very Korean.

I didn't think it was a great pic technically, and in terms of the subject matter. But I take issue with calling rows and rows of monotonous, low-quality footwear un-Korean! Laughing

I thought all the winners were deserving. I would have picked ulsanchris's farmer's pic over the shoe picl, for the same "Koreanness" aspect others have talked about.

I though ulsanchris, diver and moldyrutabaga should have received more consideration.

Finally, I thought Logan's (Logan? who/where are you?) pics were a class above. I would've picked the gas mask woman as the winner. He had some other awesome pics in his gallery as well.
