My friend saw some korean guys "preparing" a dog...first they whacked it with an iron bar to break a hind leg, so it is then less of a problem to deal with. And then they tenderise it by beating it all over its muscle areas, to get the juices and hormones flowing through. After a while it is simply killed with a blow to the head. And then, bled on the spot..

interesting that most koreans make the distinction between pet dogs and ones that are for eating.

The practice of eating dog, eating it in the summer months, and the belief that dog is healthy comes from China where dog has been eaten for thousands of years. Though in China; (1) eating dog is no big deal, just another dish, and (2) if you follow the old traditions and beliefs you have to respect and treat your food humanely before you kill, it must never overly suffer.

Once again Korea has taken something from the Chinese and done them one better, elevating dog eating to a national tradition.

I've tried it once, but I didn't find it particularly delicious or anything. Not inclined to try it again.

At least the Chinese then and those who follow this philosophy aren't hypocrites.

in PNG they say - "if it moves, eat it; if it doesn't move, push it, then eat it."

in PNG they eat anything at all. cat, dog, man.... it doesn't matter. and they have no concept of cruelty to animals. i once saw a man start to butcher a possum without even killing it first.... i stepped in and killed it.

Tried it once..and actually thought it was pretty tasty...
I object to the manner in which they're killed, but otherwise have no qualms about eating what is a domestic animal.
Overexploited wild animals are a different story altogether..

lepid gecko- I hardly think it is hypocritical for people to object to the overly cruel method of the killing of dogs here in Korea. Like others have stated, I have no problem with people eating meat of any kind as long as it is killed as humanely as possible.

To those that don't believe that the dogs are tortured before they are killed, all you need do is visit Moran Market in Seongnam. A traditional market known for its dog. You might have to hang out for a while beofre they kill one... but just wait and they will. Absolutely shocked me in my first week here.

Yep, been there, done that.

And:

I have no problem with people that eat meat. However, selective morality based on sentimental imagery and association smacks of hypocricy.

This hits the nail right on the head lepid...I share that sentiment.

In China it's called two legged pork.

In Africa they refer to it as blond pig. (apparently the western variety tastes better)

One of my earliest memories is of one of the tribal elders in our village in Irian Jaya recounting his younger days as hunter for the tribe and describing what human meat tasted like. If I recall correctly he said it tasted like pork, but stronger and saltier. What I do remember very clearly was the wistful, longing look in his eyes.

i know that look !!! have seen it often!

my haus-boi used to take a break and go home to his village in enga. when he came back to my house he was always somehow darker and wilder. he would tell my kids these amazing stories about the tribal fighting going on - how he and his brothers killed a man and ate a piece of his liver to avoid being haunted by his ghost.... the thing is - he was gleeful as he told this!

old man in chimbu told me that they roasted a missionary once clothes and all. all but his shoes burnt off in the cooking. he complained that this missionary had tough feet!
