You guys know more than me I bet, so:

My laptop works fine, the only thing is, when I'm playing a graphic intensive game, the fugger gets really really damn hot. More than my old laptop which had lower specs. Anyway, I took the thing apart one day and verified that the three fans (two mounted on a heatsink in the corner and one by itself in the middle) are all functioning. It seems to be an issue of when the computer feels like turning on the fans. Honestly, I'd prefer to use the little bit of extra electricity and run the fans 100% of the time. Is there any way to do this?



By the way, I ran a SANDRA system analysis and it says that the cooling fans and temperature sensors are all running okay.

As far as I know laptops aren't made for graphic intensive anything. Their primary use is documents. So it may not be a single problem but just the sum total of all the parts. The age of your laptop may be pertinent. Video card ram, game name, chipset (pIII, Athlon), processor speed, ram should result in a more precise answer.

The bios or perhaps software that came with your motherboard may allow you to reset your fan activation temps but I wouldn't do that without very careful consideration.

From the research i did when selecting my new notebook... which was handed down by the God's up high i might add.... all notebooks which run on high speed do get hot... like it, love it, learn to live with it. Get a cooler for the underbelly if its disturbing you.... that will run you anywhere from 20 000, to 60 000.

I'm nowhere near as technically insightful as demophobe thundarr, or mr brown... but from one fumbler to another, that's the word on the street. What kind of rig is it? Not a Sambo computer by any chance?

P4 2.8ghz processor
ATI Radeon 7500 64MB DDR
512MB DDR
60GB hard drive


That's the basics... The graphics card is probably killin' me.

64mb ddr isn't that great. Remember your true techie date hasn't arrived yet but I would think 128 at least for a video card for a video intensive game. Also the P4 does get hot. IBM and others will release a new type of chip next year which will have strong computing power but less heat. I think they are literally sticking two lower chips together with a link between then.

The heat issue for the latest chips is a customer quality issue now.

Your video card may be contributing to the heat as well since it probably has to run at full capability all the time to keep up with the game demands.

If you can, let some air get between the computer and the table it's on. I have a laptop that gets pretty warm as well, so I made a little stand of 4 short legs that put some space between the laptop and the table, allowing better airflow, and thus cooling.

Most laptops are made for the heat they produce. It's not a big worry, but a cooler computer is a more stable, long-lasting computer. I don't go for after-market cooling products on laptops...they aren't needed. Just the simple step of creating airflow is enough.

We shouldn't forget that these days are hot and humid...not good environments for computers...they will run hotter than usual, but probably still within spec....

The cooling on my desktop system is insane, but it keeps my CPU at a nice 40~43 degrees under load and my 9800XT is overdriving comfortably. Zalman rocks....
