Thanks, everyone. The class is going nicely...it was too easy at first, but it's an intensive (four hours a day) class, so things are picking up now (and people in the class are bright and enthusiastic). From what I've heard, the teacher of the heritage class was not as good, so I'm happy to be where I am.

Once I posted the preccding message I wondered how I could explain it to people like myself who sometimes struggle with Korean subject and object markers.

θ Ⱦ is not ok because from the Korean perspective you have to say it in this way in English:

Study is the thing I hate. (as opposed to I hate study)

ΰ Ⱦ

Therefore you ned to put the subject marker on the noun "study".

But when you use the gerund form (~~ϱ) you still retain yourself as the subject. In English;

I hate studying

() ϱ⸦ Ⱦ. (NB: the personal pronoun is not required)

Thinking about it it seemed that this is a fairly consistant rule in Korean.

In the case of the gerund, it, retains the subject markers (,) however when you use words derived from chinese characters, where you can attach ϴ to denote the verb, when using the ending verbs like or hate (ϴ, Ⱦϴ) then it becomes a noun phrase.

The thing that I hate is ______ (+ subject marker)

The thing that I like is _______ (+ subject marker)

It took me ages to work stuff like this out in my mind (perhaps because I have never attended a structured Korean language program) so, despite being a nobody in this area and without trying to confuse anyone, I hope this helps Just Because.

Once you figure it out, would you let me know? Embarassed I am Korean, but I have no idea as to why I use / and / at certain times. I just do it without thinking, I guess. Lucky me... Wink

ga/i and neun/eun are topic and subject markers.

so if u are talking about a person, place, thing, you'll probably use those.
ex- na neun hanguk e ka.

ruel/eul are uhmm...verb particals. they are usually coming before the verb.
ex- chingu ruel manna.

i guess you could think of ga/i as meaning "as for"???
like na neun (as for me...)...
o_o;;;

We usually skip ''. Just say, 'ϱ Ⱦ'. That sounds much more natural. I think Japanese people do the same; skipping 'watashiwa'.
