If you are a nice person, an interesting person, a funny person and a good teacher, you should have no problems.
At my last job there was a teacher from NZ whose parents were from India. He had all the above mentioned qualities. He taught there for years and everyone loved him. Then, when he got an offer to go to a more prestigious postion, the school supported his decision.

PS: I just noticed you said Brown Skin. The guy from NZ was actually quite black. |

| There are many teachers of color here who have done well and been popular. If you have your heart set on coming here, just do it. It will work out. |

| During the World Cup in 2002, an entire planeload of (middle-class) Thai people was turned away because some racist idiot at Passport Control 'thought' that they were coming to work illicitly. |
That's interesting, because it seems to be a variation of a story I read on a Korean website. I read that it was a Thai TV PRODUCER who was treated absolutely appallingly by immigration at Inchon Airport during the WC. He was coming in to cover the event and was physically manhandled by the goons, abused, threatened with deportation etc. Hmmm, welcome to Korea!!
As a result, and as you correctly said, the Thai government was so outraged it just stopped short of announcing a travel boycott to this country as a result. I don't know what diplomatic wonders Korea did to prevent that.
Unless the OP has a skin thicker than a rhino then I wouldn't consider coming here to teach English. I admit that's giving in to the racists but seeing as "Equal Opportunities" is a concept that's going to take a good 200 years or so to bevel into the Korean psyche I just think it's being sensible.
I'll never forget the pithy remark a Canadian friend of mine once said as we passed one of the government's unforgettable WC propaganda posters. "KOREA WELCOMES THE WORLD" it announced proudly. "Yeah, temporarily", added my friend. |
