I just started at a corporate job who has never had to hire a foreign teacher before. They aren't a school, they're a software company that is hiring me as an english consultant, so they are unaware of the visa process and allowing me to look after things.

It's a 6 month contract with option to renew for another 6 after review.
Straight-up, no-frills, salary-only. No airfare or accommodation provisions. It will only involve salary, visa sponsorship/visa run costs, and severence. Given the salary and my preference for finding my own housing, the contract is great for me.

A few questions that I'm thinking about:

1)I'm debating if I'm eligible for an E7 or if I should just file for the E2. Any thoughts?

2)It's a 6 month contract, for now. After review and both parties consent, we'll sign a new one in 6 months. Is there any headaches about getting an E2 or E7 to cover a 6 month contract? I don't think so, as I know I can get the 1 yr visa and then cancel after contract term, but I just want to be sure before going to Immigration.

3)Does a representative of the company have to come with me to file for the E2? or can I prepare the documents, have HR sign, and go to Immigration myself? Anyone done this?

I don't believe you can get an E-2 unless the company owns a school or hagwon.

Hmm...after reading the E7 profile on the Immigration website, I think that's what I'll need.

Those are very difficult to get though.

Some visa will have to apply. We'll see. I'm going to have a friend who knows immigration people, call them tomorrow. Just wanted to check the board.

Keep in mind as well that, for an E-2 anyway, you cannot be issued a 1 year Visa for a 6 month contract - the terms match on visa length

...but you can get a 6 month E-2 and then get it extended, if need be.

You'll need an E-7 and be advised that to obtain one the relevant ministry will have to issue a letter of endorsement. This means that the hiring company has to call the ministry and sort out which department is supposed to issue said letter which can be a real challenge.

Another tip: Have your prospective employer translate EVERYTHING including your diploma/s. Immigration softens up siginificantly when you show up with an organized, translated, complete application file.
