I was just reading a thread about racism and boycotting places here that promote racism, which led me to the following question:

When you see a job ad (in Korea) which specifies "Caucasians/Whites only," do you still read it and consider it, or do you completely ignore it?

To add to the irony, it seems that this poll is only open to Caucasians/Whites...

Yeah, I probably would. I kind of agree with Zed, even if he was saying it tongue in cheek. It really has become more difficult for the average white male to get into a university in America. Minorities are accepted with lower qualifications to fill quotas... and many that are accepted don't have to pay (or pay as much). Meanwhile, a white male will either not be accepted, or have to pay the full tuition, or have a GPA of 4.3 and an SAT of 1500. (By the way, I'll say that I came close on the GPA and did have the SAT, yet was denied for every scholarship I applied for)

Hey, I'm not saying it's right to apply for a discriminatory job... but it also isn't right that race is being used as a determining factor in university admissions (and even in some jobs, as companies over a certain number of employees are required to maintain a certain percentage of minorities).

Anyone who says "no" on moral grounds should then in turn boycott Dave's.

Guess I'll have to boycott Dave's.

If I see Caucasians/Whites only, I just skip right over the add. I know lots of other schools don't post it but think the same way, but I avoid it when I can.

Concerning affirmative action, I hope you realize that affirmative action refers not only to race (especially when it comes to college admissions). Wealth plays a role, your high school plays a role, your hometown plays a role, your gender plays a role, etc.

Maybe I'll post more about this later. I have to prepare for visitors now Very Happy

Article 11 of the Korean Constitution [Equality]
(1) All citizens are equal before the law, and there may be no discrimination in political, economic, social, or cultural life on account of sex, religion, or social status.
(2) No privileged caste is recognized or ever established in any form.
(3) The awarding of decorations or distinctions of honor in any form is effective only for recipients, and no privileges ensue therefrom.

I doubt a victory in court, or a fine, against the employer would change the practice. Korean nationalism is rooted in Social Darwinisim, so more than a few Koreans think darker skin is less socially acceptable than theirs, hence they see nothing wrong with the ad.

Um, every court would throw that out the window.

It says that "citizens" aren't to be discriminated against.

How many hagwon teachers here are citizens?

It also doesn't mention race, as they are probably assuming all citizens are the same race.

I think someone could bring this to court, if he or she can find a lawyer willing to persue the issue.

Dave's breaking the law!

You're a criminal, Dave.

Actually, Korea is a signatory to the ILO discrimination convention of 1958(C11). They ratified it in 1997.

Also their equal employment act of 1987 also prohibits discrimination based on physical apperance.

But we all know how Koreans (some) respect their own and international laws. Or more importantly we all know how well laws are enforced here.

As for the op, no I don't apply for those jobs because I am black. But hey if my white brothers and sisters need an upperhand in getting a job across here I say go right ahead.

I hear it's real hard to be a white man in the states at least according to ryleeys, must be the same thing over here if they are applying for those jobs.

Good point. Like you said, it doesn't appear they enforce it. Maybe we should blame the papers for closing their eyes and accepting the cash.

This thread is a moot point as we all know racism doesn't exist in Korea.

I'm curious, do those that say they would not apply also bypass those ads that ask for a certain age or sex too?
When the school asks for your picture do you refuse?
I realised before I came to Korea that I was going to a developing (note: not developed) country and I knew that I would be discriminated against simply for the fact I was foreign. If I don't like it I have myself to blame and the solution is simple, leave. Afterall, this isn't MY country. If this was to happen at home then that would be a different story.
While I loathe the backward beliefs I do appreciate the honesty.
So if the ad asks for something I can deliver then I apply.

Been looking for a post from you sinse saturday night gathering, and you came right on the money.

I don't apply for them myself. There are lots of job offers, and though this particular thing is in my favour, I figure if they have that attitiude then they are probably even more backwards in general than the average employer.
