Hi,
I would like to get an external hard drive, preferably FireWire or USB2 and 120GB. I'm looking at the Iomega 120 online in the States for around $170. Has anyone seen it or something similar/better in Yongsan? How are prices for external drives? I checked a couple online sites here in Korea, but the prices look absurbly high for even 20 gigs of external storage...but maybe I am mistaken.

Click on "F-HDD" at the top...scroll about 1/2 way down and check it out. Lots to choose from, but as I have recommended in the past...get a USB2 external hard drive casing and just buy the hard drive of your choice for inside. The cases are compact and portable...about 30,000~50,000 and then of course, the cost of the hard drive.

The good thing is that you can put whatever drive you want inside.

The prices are crazy for external drives. I think I'll wait for Christmas and pick one up cheap back home.
I like your idea about the internal in a casing, but I'm not too hardware savy and would probably botch it. Embarassed

I took an old 30 GB drive out of a computer and stuck it in a 5.25" USB 2.0 enclosure (HD: free, 5.25" enclosure: $55 CDN) et viola! Instant external back-up.

Those one-button external back up drives put out by Iomega and the like are highway robbery, pure & simple.

As Bulsajo says, it's really, really easy. Just put the drive in the casing and viola! It's a great alternative to a sealed unit and if you don't feel confident, get the dude at the shop to put your drive in the case for you.

My external case is a bit older now, but it's USB 2.0 and it cost around 80,000 won (this was in 2002 so the price is likely cheaper for the same model now). Originally I had a 60 gig drive in there but I put the 60 gig in my computer and put a 30 gig into the case -- that's the biggest variable in the cost is the drive you decide to put inside.

I think I will try the internal hard drive in the USB box. Sounds easy enough.

Bason Computers sells USB 2.0-200 gig expernal hard drives for US$149.00 and 250 gigs for $209.00. Their service is fast and they ship to Korea. I've bought 3 from them for myself and friends who ordered at the same time to save on postage. You can buy either firewire or USB 2.0 models. They can use from 110 to 220 voltage (you'll have to buy an adapter, tho).

I went to yongsan and got a 120gb internal drive and external usb case for about 170,000. I went to a store called Mmart (www.mmart.co.kr) when I first arrived, and walked around for a few hours asking other stores if they could beat that price and no one could.

I recently went through the process of finding an external hdd that fit my needs. I went with an Anypak2.0 60gb which was perfect for me. It is much smaller than one of my hands so it's capacity is great.

I was shopping for ultra-portability so I wasn't up for the 2.5", 3.5" or especially the 5.25" ata133's and other firewires.

Anyways, I'm glad I got my external drive as my computer recently had a complete meltdown ie. CPU, video card, and memory failures. NICE! Good thing it still has warranty!
