My husband started to teach in Yeosu. He's monthly salary is 2.0, he got his first pay last June and there is 500,000 deduction they said it's for tax, so he only got 1.5. There's no slip or anything explaining about the deduction. My question is, is this the right tax deduction or my husband is being screwed-up?

I'll appreciate your reply on this.

What do you honestly think?

the tax rate for people in that income bracket is no more then 4%

Another cruel hogwon master (tm) strikes again! Will it never end?!??!?

EDIT- I get my "pay stub" emailed to me every month - all workers are supposed to get these things but my GUESS is that 60-75% of hogwons dont do this.

The withholding tax on 2.0 million is 33,870 according to the National Tax Service website: http://www.nts.go.kr/eng/default.html (click on Tax Guide and then on "Check your monthly withholding tax" for the calculation page).

On top of that would be residence tax of around 3,390 and National Pension or Private Pension of roughly 90,000 (4.5%) and then medical insurance of around 40,000 (~2%).

Grand total would be just shy of 170,000 for a month.

Maybe the school is charging your husband a utility deposit of 300,000 or more for a couple of months.

Either way, you should get the pay slip with itemized deductions. CYA

Cheers
