For those heading home at the end of summer, or anyone else for that matter, and so's we can all get you to take us there when we visit,

What is the best Korean restaurant in your home city, and why? I just posted Adelaide's somewhere else about an hour ago, but here it is again:

'Mapo' on Gouger street. A traditional charcoal fired kalbi jjip. AU$20 all u can eat. But soju costs AU$20 a bottle.

All of the Korean restaurants in my hometown are weird. They are generally good and authentic, but there's always one thing that they just don't get right. One place actually used uncooked cabbage instead of lettuce for wrapping up your meats.

That said, Fuji on Airline Blvd. in Portsmouth has some damn good kimchijjigae and bulgogi, but you should stay away from the dalkdoritang. Really hard to find kalbi, though...had to go to NYC for that.

Back in October of 2002, I took Wifey to Niagra Falls for our honeymoon. Our first night there we went to a totally kickass Japanese sushi place. Friendly staff, cute waitress, very clean -- it was great. Still, Wifey noticed a Korean Ƚ�� and suggested we might try there the next evening. "They'll be even friendlier than the Japanese place," she said.

Boy, was she wrong.

Upon entering, my wife noticed that they had a Korean variety show on the TV. When she asked how they got Korean TV in Niagra Falls (satellite? video tape?), the owner, a dishevelled-looking ajumma, only shrugged and grunted something inaudible. We took our seats and the waiter, a Russian guy, handed us our menus. He asked my wife if she was Korean. She told him "yes," and then he just stood there, gaping at her. It was beyond uncomfortable for us both. I ordered raw fish and wifey had doenjang tchigae. I tried hers and she tried mine. Both dishes tasted awful. When wifey asked for kimchi, the owner waddled over without saying a word and plopped it down rudely in front of her. The whole time we were in there not another person walked into the restaurant. I can undersatnd why, now. Needless to say, we left without leaving a tip.

All the other Korean places we visited in Canada were really good (if not a tad too expensive compared to the prices over here), but this place was so bad Wifey started an internet campaign to warn people how terrible it is. I'm serious about that last part.

I went to one on the Gold Coast and it was the best bibimbap i ever had.

Really buttery but tasted great.

seoul garden is the most expensive one...it's good.
seoul korner is a little less expensive and it's good too...

there's other korean places, but i just haven't eaten at them....

i like budaejjigae....there's no budaejjigae in the states...

A bottle of soju is about 7$ in Canada if you get it from the distributor (I called for someone who wanted to know if it's available in stores across Canada (nope)). I guess it's about the same price in Australia. The restaurant probably can't sell it for less if it wants to make a profit.

I got a bowl of kimchi tchigae at home before coming to korea, it was $10 and so was the doenjang tchigae

Cheers for mentioning that place in Sydney, wylde, I'll have to try it out. I haven't tried any Korean restaurants yet since coming home. There used to be a Korean grocery store here in the Gong before I left for Korea, I was looking forward to going to it when I got back, but alas it was gone. As far as I know there's no Korean restaurants here in the Gong

Any of those "All you can eat" places, I take with a big grain of salt. I mean, how many places in Korea are "all you can eat" ? Especially in terms of meat?

I like to gauge Korean restaurants by their a la carte offerings. In this respect, there are a few places in Sydney I can name.

Seoul Ria in the city (Corner of George St and Goulburn St, above the Delifrance, access via lift on Goulburn St, next to the Easyway drinks shop), is probably one of the better places. Quite possibly the best place in the CBD. They've recently renovated the interior and the food is pretty good. Expect slightly higher than average prices (compared to Korean food in the rest of Sydney).

Also can recommend Eunhasu in Strathfield. Funny, considering the HUGE Korean population here, there are only one or two good eateries in the entire suburb. Recommend Eunhasu (Under the tall apartment block out of the bus plaza, opposite the entry into the Strathfield Shopping Plaza car park), and also Coolabah (cafe / restaurant) which is opposite the old Post Office on Raw Square.

Eastwood quite probably has the most, and the best eateries in regards to Korean food in the whole of Australia. For some reason, there are a LOT, and they're all pretty damn good.

Off the top of my head, we have Yangja Gang (Yangzee River), if you're partial to KOREAN style Chinese food. You know, the jjajang myun, tangsoo yook, and ggangpoongki etc. Then there's Mirak. Their specialty is yongyang boyang tang, without the dog meat, but with lamb. Totally sensational on cold winter days. Split it with 2-3 other people and pretty good value too. There's a little eatery on the underside of Yangja Gang, which does simple meals, but their Yangnyom chicken is out of this world. Generous portions and lots of the old classics.

Finally, in Campsie, the single decent place is probably Sejong Hwegwan, which is next door to the Woolworths. Recommend their nakji bokkum, and their dweji bossam.
