the todler peeing in public thing is pretty nasty all round, and as for it being excused cause of lack of education for the current generation of women?
I can imagine that maybe being a valid excuse for the kids grandparents- the ones who came of age before the war- maybe.

The part that really horrified me was that it was so close to the produce section where I had just selected some veggies. Mad

"Public pissing" probably deserves it's own separate thread, but I'll be damned if I'm going to be the perv who lauches it! Wink I've seen those "ddong"-related threads around... I just don't have the stomach to explore them. Perhaps if I did, I might find comments like I'm about to make.

I agree that this pissing-in-public thing can't be placed at the doorstep of Korean women's alleged lack of education. And from the firsthand observations of yourself, me and other posters, it clearly matters not whether the mothers came of age before or after the Korean War.

I'm no social anthropologist, but I'd say it's obvious Koreans as a whole don't have the same hangups about bodily functions & emissions that we in the West tend to. Ever see that Korean TV commercial for... what is it? baby formula? laundry soap?... where the mother is changing the baby's nappies and he... well, he squirts her right in the face. Koreans will giggle at it, while the Westerners will all feign a smile, wince and then wonder if prime-time TV in the West will ever be ready for something that.... blunt? off-putting?

The habits of a lifetime don't begin in adulthood, and it's important to remember that such things as indoor plumbing and flush toilets that today's youngest Koreans take for granted were novelties to their parents. Likewise, public restrooms are still a work in progress, and dedicated restrooms for corporate tenants in Seoul's newest high-rise office buildings are still a rarity. (Rather, you have, say, 10 companies on each floor all sharing the same loo.)

So the next time you see a young Korean mother in the vegetable aisle, or on the subway as I did two nights ago, chugging a 500ml carton of milk in 10 seconds flat so that "junior" could use it as a makeshift wee-wee receptacle, try to appreciate where she's "coming from." I do wonder about their poor little sisters, though...Are they supposed to piss their pants or just "hold it" till the family reaches its destination?

3 year-olds can piss into an empty soju bottle at a restaurant table but I can't let off a decent burp without getting a "you dirty monster!!" look.

hmmm...

If I was a cook smoking while I worked...
If I was a waiter walking out of the restroom while zipping up my pants
If I extinguished a cigarette into a plate people just ate off of
If I took off my shoes in the bus and started massaging my feet
If I urinated all over myself on the bus because I was drop dead drunk at 3 pm on Sunday.
If I was waiting in line in any fast food joint flaling my arms about like a spastic freak
If I just walked into the street without looking
If my wife was carrying the baby and the baby bag while I walked in front of her (seen this so many times here)
If I had the nerve to push in front of people on line to buy a subway card, ticket, or token
If I had the nerve to push in front of people on line in McDonalds because I only wanted an ice cream or coffee
If I answered my cell phone during a movie
If I answered my cell phone during a movie multiple times
If I screamed like a banshee on my cell phone in a bus or subway.
If I went up to random Asian people on the street and asked them "Are you a Korean?"
If I walked into a Korean resteraunt at home and loudly told my friend "These people are in America! They should eat American food!"
If I ever dared to pick my nose or ears on a bus, train or subway
If I coughed or sneezed in any public space without covering my mouth or nose
If I ate an entire meal with my mouth open
If I spoke to anyone with my mouth full of food

more and more

Hey, I've seen that happen back home. And the guy wasn't punished, he was gently led off the bus and left sitting on the bus stop bench.

I've seen that done too back home, unpunished, by... the mentally challenged!

Oh, I wish they were punished back home, but they aren't in public, especially on public transit, next to the drunk guy.

No way. Who sneezes back home without covering their mouth and nose? Nobody over the age of eight that doesn't wear a hockey helmet when they go outside.

But these are not all sins committed merely by "K-men"...(which is what the original post asked for, lest you need reminding.) The ones in bold are things that ajumas do too, heck some of them are things that even your beautiful girlfriends have done. Oh, and yeah, some of them are things that even you cultivated, elegant, refined lovely Western gentleman yourselves do. Laughing

My girl friend managed a classy gym/pool/spa complex where Koreans began to frequent back home. They learnt rather quickly that spitting is frowned on as they were banned from the complex. That really is filthy.

-Telling people speaking other languages to be quiet
-butting into other peoples business whilst in a public space
-telling foriegners "this is our place" ala Russel Crowe in Romper Stomper
-Refusing to serve someone because of ethnicity
-asking a local girl why she is on a date with a foreigner when your opinion was not asked for

I had a French colleague in UK, she seldom got through the day without someone yelling "Bonjour" at her down the internal phone, but then expecting to continue the conversation in English. I knew it annoyed her, constantly being reminded that she's different, but she dealt, as we do.

I had a French girlfriend who experienced random bonjouring from strangers too, when they heard her accent.
