I'm curious as to what the situation is for people who resign for another year or, have worked in the program for a number of years and decide to move on, do you get severance pay like the hogwon teachers?

If you have renewed and resigned a new contract each year say over a 5 year period, are there any entitlements to look forward too?

Would 5 years "work" translate into 5 years worth of severence?

If yes, would the 2 weeks orientation and time between signing be seen as less than 52 weeks and rather as a 50 week contract? And, as a interested aside, would they add 50 multiplied by 5 and pay you for 4 years rather than 5 years of accumulated severance, really curious as to how that would work?

What about insurance contributions, do they subtract "your" contributions as one large lump sum at the end of your contract?? I've heard of this hapening to 1 year contractees upon resigning, would the provincial office just save your huge impending bill on your day of judgement?

Until 2003, EPIK, as a gov. program & to its great disgrace, broke the law of the ROK(!) & issued only 50 week contracts to teachers. Now, interestingly, there are some 2 year vets who are leaving this year & are expecting a full 2 year severance payout. There could be some hell to pay if it's not given.

As for "insurance", do you mean health insurance? If so, you don't get a dime back. It works like fire insurance-you don't get the premium refunded if your house doesn't burn down.

However, depending on your nationality, you are entitled to at least part of your pension contributions being refunded.

Mosley, thanks for your input. The insurance I may have mis-named, meaning the 50% the employer contributes into that covers health issues is what I meant. When I first heard of someone completing an Epik contract and getting hit with all sorts of unidentified deductions, as well as their 50% contribution, I thought that was a bit harsh.

An Epik contract seems interesting as the govt organizers get people here with a govt contract, then hand out a new one at the end of orientation signing you over to a province. If a signee, has the date of the first contract commencement date (inclusive of orientation) wouldn't the new contract under the same visa be seen as one contract(1st & 2nd) as you are not required to do a visa run?

no visa run required as you are working for the same employer......you just go to your local immigration office with the new contract and everything is taken care of.......
