But you have to be very naive or just dishonest to be "shocked" by this.

You do realize that teens the world over do these things right?

Sorry to hear about your eye opening experience though.

As for Korean blood, was that supposed to be an insult? If so, try harder as it was both irrelevant and frankly not very insulting at all.

the 'korean blood' thing meant that you don't seem to find a problem with it.. that is the korean response..

why would you defend this or sweep it under the carpet?

get on your feet mate and do these guys a favor...

i, like you just let it go but yesterday i snapped a bit.. it won't happen in my classes again..

bring back winter and i might relax a little... but being generous and spending a fair bit of cash on these students only to have them lie, cheat and steal to take advantage of my kindness is heartbreaking..

i am not helping them if i allow it to continue...

teens do this the world over?

yea right.. well maybe in iraq mate.. it doesn't happen in australia.. maybe it does but not in front of the teacher...

i wouldn't be game..

do you have citizenship yet?

And that somehow makes it better? Laughing Laughing Laughing

Nice double standard Wylde.

Newsflash: I never said I let is slide, I don't.

I also know that this is not unique to korean teens. The way they do it might be unique but in the end its the same result.

I lie to my students about not liking soju. I am a liar.

I cheat when I try and do coin tricks with my students. I am a cheater.

I definitely steal candy, under intimidation, from my students. I am a thief.

And they are only kindergarten kids.

And you wonder why they are like that by the time they get to middle and high school? It's because all the other foreign teachers they have had have taught them well! Wink

It is not the Foriegn teachers who are at fault! It is the entire Korean mentality!

They only think something is wrong if they get caught doing it!

They punch police officers if they are given tickets for doing something wrong.

Parents call the school saying that they are moving their kid to another hogwan because their marks arent high enough at this one.

Koreans always go for the easy way and are shocked and surprised when someone actually enforces consequences upon them!

I caught a high school student stealing at a convenience store he had stuffed several chocolate bars into his bag right in front of me and walked out of the store. I grabbed him and frogmarched his ass back into the store...all the time he was saying 'why why why'. The clerk put the chocolate bars back on the shelf and let him go...no police...nothing. Rolling Eyes

Koreans believe that when someone is actually caught doing something wrong that is punishment enough...the loss of face. 10 years ago that may have been true but today many of the teenagers here have no concept of honour!

Dont blame the foreign teacher who sees them for 5 hours or less a week! Blame it on the Korean society that is around them 24/7.

That is a good post...
I had a similar thing happen at a noodle house...crowded Oodong or Oolong noodle place, steamy hot and this middle aged lady whipped out her smoke and lit up right next to me....I coughed politely, made a fanning motion and gave a look of ewwww! I got an evil look and a cloud of smoke blown in my general direction....she got a large English teacher grab her smoke out of her hand and drop it into her coffee!

Timid I am not!

I wonder whether the woman smoking incident in the article was more of a battle of the sexes/generations. Would any of those older men been chastised for lighting up? (Not to excuse it.)

It's endemic. They cannot see that it's wrong because they are not taught that it is wrong. That is why so many major international universities will not accept TOEIC, TOFEL, TESOL scores from Korean applicants. They have to sit an independent exam before they are admitted. Look at the school system, 40 plus students in a class, one reasonably intelligent one surrounded by 3 dumb as dog shit and the smart one provides all the answers for the other three. Kids here are never taught to be responsible for their actions. Say and do what they like and it will be fine. Smile
