changed me.. in many ways.,..

I have became less pateince with stupid people.. more than before.

I get easily pissed off with koreans cause they are first to blame..
then again I am driving average 3-4 hours a day.. and really koreans cant drive..
I get pissed off alot about the way the government runs this country, and treats its people like children.. when they are just as stupid.
blar blar blar..

good points.
I have learned to be superfical like the locals..
I hAVE learned that respecting someone in bowing etc.. acually doesnt mean nothing..
I have leaned alot about koreans and there ways. that I never knew before.. its amazing.
then again. im aging so im learning as you do in age.. and I would have learned the same stuff in any country I guess..

I really do need to get away for a while.. and miss korea, then come back excited again..

It changed me too. I never thought I could despise a country's citizens for their ways. Governments are easy targets, but citizens? No. I have also become more pro-American, but not blindly nationalistic. I know there are problems here and much to criticize. On the other hand, I am much more patient, appreciative and happy in my own country. Things that used to tick me off do so no more. I moved to a nice area with nice people and I am very happy. But Korea still haunts me. I still dream about unpleasant experiences. But slowly, I am letting go of my anger. And there are good things that I remember, but don't miss. I am learning to put it all in perspective. Korea, in the grand scheme of things, is just another actor on the world stage, playing a minor part.

I guess you can say Canadians play even a smaller part than Koreans then, except when it comes to bitching and griping.

My gf has started to tell me that I'm becomming Korean Shocked
But seriously, somehow I've turned from being a serious introvert to someone people have to yell at to shut up and a lot of my old self-image as really nice goofy absent-minded professor type is starting to unravel and I'm not sure quite what I'm turning into, I'm sure when I go home people will notice the difference...

Quote:
I used to be much more "left-wing take care of others". The competitive atmosphere in Korea has rubbed off on me.

I know what you mean, I'm hard left but the idiocy of a lot of the anti-Americanism in Korea has really started getting on my nerves to an extent that I never thought it would. On another forum (where I've been posting very regularly for over 5 years) I posted an anti-Sunshine policy rant and most of the regulars' responce was to talk about how I'm turning conservative, which for someone like me is very unnerving.

Quote:
It is trying to make me a bitter, rude person who doesn't care for the feelings and opinions of others.

I have to fight constantly to keep my laid back, open minded persona.

Same here. Exactly. Its hard to be laid back when you have to herd kids and in my old job I was caught in a nasty spiral of being treated badly by my boss, so I would teach badly so the kids would get worse etc. etc. Think I'm getting much saner at my new job.

I have become so obessed with my apperance. Before I didn't care now I will rarely leave the house without make up. I spend money on clothes. It has it's bonuses, I get a lot more respect because of it.

I've become a lot more go with the flow type person. If you get caught in a rip at the beach the best thing to do is to let the current take you out and then use it to get you back in. If you swim against then you're going to exhaust yourself and you'll get back where you want to eventually.

I've learnt that not everyone shares my world view and have learnt to make piece with that.

I've become a lot less idealistic and trusting of people.

I've become more conservative. I used to complain about so much back home.

Never ever before coming to Korea has something like 'God these (nationality X insert here) are so retarded', I'd have been shocked to hear anyone say this in the past and would have probably leapt to the defence of Koreans and cultural differences, no more.

Seeing Koreans doing really dumb stuff everyday is grating. On the plus side I've become less sensitive to other people being rude and obnoxious, my tolerance levels to this sort of behaviour are now much higher than they were before.

Sorry I'm having a bad Korea day , so I'm off to the pub for a few pints.

Korea made me realize that political correctness really is the western world's white elephant (and only theirs).

Having taken some anthro/soc courses in my university, I was taught to believe that no culture is better or worse than other, they're just different. What a bunch of hooey. Some cultures are fairly obviously superior to others and can be demonstrably shown to be so (provided you've in mind a specific standard against which you can rate them. i.e. equality amongst the peoples, productivity, etc.).

It's made me want to associate less and less with people from my own culture, because of a few absolute pieces of human rubbish I've encountered. Plus, you never realize how much of a closet bigot you are until you hear someone else who thinks just like you do, speaking.

It makes me appreciate and admire a person more who isnt an absolute piece of rubbish.

It has thickened my skin and sharpened my tongue

I've learned the fine art of office politics. And it disgusts me.

It's also made me less tolerant of those who come across as stupid/unbearable to me.

It's made me realize what being at the bottom of the social ladder is like.

It's enabled me to earn and save some cash where I've never been able to do back home, because let's face it, if we were living the good life back home, none of us would be here.

It's made me more cold and calculating because the only person who'll cover my ass here is me.

It's made me realize that money IS more important than chasing tail. Tail follows money.

I can teach, as much as I dont really enjoy the job.

It's made me appreciate the wisdom of "Ease on down, ease on down the road..."

korea has changed me in the following ways:

i own more shoes than i ever did before.

i give less of a rat's ass about what i look like or what people think of me, because they're gonna stare and point and stereotype anyway.

i'm almost fully converted to the metric system. forget the standard american crap like fahrenheit and inches and pounds. it's all about celsius, milliliters, kilograms, etc.

Your post (somewhat edited to fit my situation) sums it up nicely.
You beat me to it.
Although I can't say that I was ever tolerant of stupid people. While some people do not suffer fools gladly, I suffer them not at all.

Unfortunately so. Korea is single minded in its drive to economic success and materialism, and the tastes of the women so blatantly reflect this. Shallow, yes. However there are women who are attracted to other things about you, if you highlight your strong points.
Money is important here, but its still not the be all and end all, ultimately.

All my friends back home seem to like me a lot...The reason I am here is financial.

And unless you've been living with a paper bag over your head, you will have noticed that while not every expat is bad, the ones that are bad, are extremely so.
