At the end of class ( uni ) I say "No Homework!" then wait a few seconds, then say "Wait a minute, I forgot, there is some homework tonight" and let that sink in for a bit, then someone usually says "What is it?" and I say "The homework for tonight is to be happy!"

i give them names that i use when the attention starts to slide..

depending on the reason, the owners of these names change regularly but each 1 of my classes at some stage, has a...

crazy boy/girl
ugly boy/girl
sexy boy/girl
sleepy boy/girl
george bush
tom cruise
britney spears

when ever i call somebody any of the above names, we have a roar of laughter.

if a student falls asleep (in the 5 seconds it takes for me to talk to another student) i'll walk over to him/her and mildly yell in his/her ear... "WHAT ARE YOU DOING"? koreans give such great results for these things, i have had 3 students fall off their chair and the rest jump about 412 feet in the air..

again... roars of laughter.

(there are lots more things that can be done, but, i don't want to give away all my secrets Wink )

i am a clown in many, many ways but i still have their respect.. cuz as soon as i raise my voice, they know i'm serious..

this isn't a thread about discipline, so, i just cut out the next 4 paragraphs..

needless to say.. no matter how big a clown i am at school, i can command their respect in about 5 seconds..

things are different at a hakwon though.. i have never had this kind of authority in korea before and it is amazing what can be acheived with it too.

sometimes i dance a little for em, "hot duga duga hot duga duga hot" that sort of thing, You have to be a dancing monkey for a lot of these kids because they get bored so quick. Make them talk, throw out words and make them do a sentence with that word. Nothing sucks more than my ass talking the whole class! Hell who am i to give advice, I had one kid tell me the rest of the class was too loud and he couldnt sleep!

Elementary and Middle school tricks:

1. Ask all the boys, "Who's your girlfriend?" and ask the girsl, "Who's your boyfriend?"

2. Asl boys if they like princess maker or Sailor Moon. Tell them that Sailor Moon is your girlfriend. (If you're a guy.)

3. Ask girls, "Who is your favorite wrestler?"

4. With respect, if it comes up, you can change a Korean name for something real into something funny. Here in Bundamg, there is a mountain called Bulgoksan, and I simply refer to it as "Bulgogi-san." Then, when they're at the peak of hard belly laughter, I desribe the imaginary mountain in detail..."A Whole mountain of bulgogi, ah, that's a mountain I'd like...."

5. If they're not too weird, refer to students with the English written on their t-shirts. "So, Strawberry girl, what's the answer?"

6. Immitate wrestlers. Say "Can you smell what the rock is cooking?" in his voice. Even the girls will laugh.

How 'bout this rainy season, huh?

I have these big spongy dice from kim and Johnsons. I start a sentance, and toss one at a kid. They have to finish the sentance befor e they can throw it at anyone else. Might be the simplest game ever, but it's very flexible and gets them speaking

I tell them that I have nothing but their best interests in mind, and that I won't be satisfied until their collective english skills are second to none.........no wait, sorry - that's what I say to make me laugh.

I play pranks on them. Sometimes, I walk around the tables while they are doing workbook and while I help them, I switch all of their bags. They are really surprised that they didn't even notice me doing it at the end of class. Sometimes I steal their stuff when they are unaware and hide it or plant it on another desk, in a bag, or on a kid.

I think I am the most disruptive enitity to my lessons!!! It's all good fun though, the kids love interacting with me in a funny way. I teach them English to deal with the situations I create as well. They can accuse me of stealing, ask me where their stuff is, ask for the return of their property, etc. in different ways.
