Here's a new question of sorts...
Anyone here with a laptop with an international warranty? I'm trying to figure out which companies have international warranties without the pain of calling up all these different companies (Lazy of me, I know ). Also any experiences dealing with the warranty overseas would be helpful.
I think Sony has caught my eye moreso than anyone else, so any help would be appreciated.

Dell does have an international warranty if you buy at least a 3 year on-site warranty. If you search their site under international service program you can get all the details. I believe that a previous poster is correct when he said only Latitudes were serviceable in Korea. However, they are also currently on sale at Dell under the Small Business section (no actual verification of a business is required).
As for the Celeron processor, if you like multi-tasking, stay far far away.

Toshiba has a pretty good 3 year international warranty which I and a few others have had the opportunity to verify in Korea.
The only catch is (or was?I got mine in '97 and maybe they've changed since then) that it is an option rather than part of the standard warranty.
I think I paid an extra $40 CDN for it, and it was worth every cent: I dropped the laptop in year 3 and needed a new hard drive- it was serviced and replaced in a week at the Yongsan Toshiba service centre, with no crazy surcharges attached or attempts to sell me something I didn't need.. in other words they honoured the warranty (I know this is what I paid for so I shouldn't have been surprised, but these days it always seems like somebody is trying to get out of the warranty or tack on some mysterious surcharges).
And actually THEY were the ones who told me the warranty was still in effect; I had forgotten it went 3 years and had assumed that any warranty I had would already have expired. |

Thanks for the info, guys!
I am currently typing this on a toshiba and didn't even think of looking into a toshiba for Korea. In fact, when I went to Korea 2 years ago, this is what I bought with me!
Hmmm....Need to do more research.
Thanks again,

I called Toshiba and they now include the international warranty with their standard warranty, so there is no extra fee involved.
Still researching,

Just to let you guys know.
I'm getting a Toshiba.
Sony doesn't offer an international warranty that includes S. Korea
IBM didn't interest me
HP didn't impress me
And Dell...I didn't want to be forced into getting a Lattitude since that is the only one they service
Their loss....Toshiba's gain...Thanks everyone for your help and advice |

I just bought a Compaq R3000 with an AMD 64 3000 processor, 60 gig hard drive, 512 Ram, Cd/DVD burner, nvidia 32 mb graphics card and it is sweet. You should give it a go. Only $1700 dolaridoos!!! I looked at Toshiba - good computers, no better than Compaq, no greater package deals than the one I got. Just thought I'd mention. |

I would be quite surprised if BestBuy's warranty would include paying for someone in Korea to fix it. I suspect that you will be required to ship it over to a destination they suggest, and thenpay for it to be shipped back. If you use Airmail with insurance and registration, that is looking to add at least $100 and be out of a laptop for at least two weeks. |

According to Best Buy's website, they offer two options. On-site repair if they have an authorized repair agency in the area who can come to your house (US only), or you have to bring the unit to a drop-off facility.
It says nothing about how they will attempt to find someone to repair it if you do not fall under those two options. |
