| Douse yourself with lighter fluid and set yourself on fire in the classroom, they won't mess with you again. Damn sure gets their attention. |

Remember no one makes a dime in these bloody Hagwons if it isn't for the foreigners. The locals often seem to forget that and they need to be reminded!!! |
That is a nice thought, but how does it account for the thriving English hagwons that have no foreigners, only Korean teachers? I know of quite a few and they are making plenty of money. |

You're probably right. I don't know that much about the entire ESL scene in Korea, but, I do know that my Hagwon and many others business is completely dependant on foreign teachers. Yes Koreans teachers are intrical, but alot of parents must have their kids taught by a foreigner.[/quote] |

A few months ago I wrote my rant on my tips forsurviving hogwons.
I agree that threatening to quit is a dicey game and may backfire further down the track. Last year the two co-workers who got screwed over the worst by my boss were the ones who had threatened to quit. In the end we all got screwed but in the case of those who worked with the director it ended up being a few hundred k while those who caused problems lost out big time.
But I don't know your situation so in the end you got do what is right for you. |

This rings all too true. Your hogwon is trying to convince you to sign on for another year, aren't they?
I heard the exact same nonsense from both of my previous employers after they shafted me on hours and pay, and verbally abused me on a virtually daily basis. I stuck it out like a man and fulfilled the terms of my contract bothe times, but both wonjangnims acted completely confused, shocked and hurt ("but after all I've done for you!" ) when I told them I was going to try my luck elsewhere for the next year.
I swear, there has to be some kind of test that requires you to be completely dense before they will sell the rights of a kiddie hogwon franchise. |

| What CLG said re; those foreigners who threated to quit ending up being treated badly. Threatening to quit is an affront to the boss, especially a despot who believes you ought to value the job by licking his or her boots. I wouldn't threaten to quit because it's too melodramatic, though I have before and it works. Along the lines of deliberately not looking fulfilled or happy every day just to 'let them know' you're 'on the verge' and 'nobody's fool'. I horse around and scowl growling at the boss, passing with her poker face, and she cracks up. |
