Two weeks ago a student handed me a letter that was obviously Babelfish output. It was totally unintelligible dreck except for one lucid sentence that cut through the note with total clarity: "Yes, I am inferior".

I want to know what it was the student put in to get the translator to come up with that.

OH good lord...last year ALL the students 800 of them had to write diaries over the summer vacation. I got to check them all. The most amusement I got was reading...or should I say trying to read the translation program diaries.

"sparkling fresh divert kim bab"

"father notorious fun beach fish"

Then I had one student (btw I teach ALL boys) just cut and pasted a diary from the internet. However, he should have checked it a little more carefully as it was a girls diary and it was all about her cramps, and PMS and how she hoped she would not have to have a female operation like her Mom.

I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO CRACK UP! I read this one in class. My partner teacher translated...(poor gal was so embarassed but I insisted) The boy almost jumped out the window. But I eventually made it a joke and it was a good warning for those who attempted to use these programs and sites again.

If you're looking for lone words to translate from either Korean to English or from English to Korean, and you have a vague understanding of the basics of Korean language, www.bluedic.com is a far better translation program.

It can't do sentences or phrases, however.

I always liked using Babel fish for fun; such as going from English into Korean and back again.

Yeah CM, I did that once, except I kept running the result through any of the various languages, then spit the final result out in English. It was...horrendous.

It is the centimeter, I never has made that, if she only maintained to the result the job with several nobodies of languages, used English has compared to the final result more new one escupo towards outside. It is... frightful.

When I first got here, i was interested in fishing in korea, so i used bablefish to translate a fishing website. Not one word of it had anything to do with fishing. Some quotes...

'for about it will dance from peyang the dome whole milk eastern hook'

'reinforcement original intention gun nine original intention it is hot, thang'

'before trillion which it will dance, it will grow like'

'Well! trillion guidences which also the desciple and three parts will dance.'

'main floored room lake well! religious belief and song bath of sea batter'

I kind of want to piece it all together and pawn it off as some sort of new wave poetry to get the excentrics all excited. Little will they know that it is about fishing...hahahahaha.
