what i got last yr was a man won ticket that was similar to the card in that you could use it over and over (til the machine ate it).
but this card is a new one that i got when i just arrived...maybe on...july 1 i got it. so there's no way i could have used man won that fast...the ticket last yr lasted me most of my time here.
i haven't really used it since that day, but since the subway ppl seem to know about the problem i can go to them again if i have problems...
i'd suggest u get it tho. if u have a wallet all u have to do is put it on top of the scanner, you don't even have to take the card out. (i do, but that's just cuz i'm like that)...
u can get them anywhere. those little newspaper/candy stands probably sell 'em. i got mine at the bank, 12,00won~ |

Saving your change is a great way to save a little, unnoticed, money. I always pay with denominations that will actually yield some change. I put it in a water bottle (with the top cut off), and after a couple of months, I am able to cash it in for a nice 100,000 to 200,000 won chunk of dough!
Just sort the coins into the different types and the bank will drop them into a rolling machine and hand you the cash. Very painless! I just got 150,000 won last week doing just this. My wife and I will use it during vacation! |

A more interesting question might be to aks what you do with your 10 won coins...
My buddy had a huge pile of them back in '98 when he was getting ready to leave the country for good. He didn't want to throw them out, obvisouly, but he had a hard time coming up with something useful to do with them. So I suggested he take them down to the subway station and buy a ticket with thme from the auto-ticket machine thingy.
So we haul a huge sack of coins down to SHinchon-yuk and start pumping them 1 at a time into the machine. The funny thing is, the mahcine maxed out after lsomething like 300 won... it refused to take anymore. So he finished the purchase with a couple of 100 won coins and got his ticket.
The other funny thing was the people waiting behind us who were getting pissed off about how long it was taking us.

I keep some change in my desk at school. I'm gradually introducing Korean kids to the idea of the tooth fairy.

actually there's another thing i've been doing - i have a secret "chun-bucket" in my classroom, i stick all my extra 1000 won notes in there. after doing this religiously for what only seemed like a week, i had 50 grand in it.
i'm going to have to clean it out though, even tho my students are hideously wealthy, that doesn't mean they aren't thieves... |

And I'll just use the 150,000 I didn't take out of the bank for my vacation and save myself a trip to the bank to wait in yet another line while they roll my coins.  |
