After recently discovering my status as a gyopo and all that it entails in regards to English teaching jobs in Korea(thanks to this site), I have been sifting through the ads trying to figure out which schools would or would not consider hiring me. I've noticed many of them ask for a recent photo. Are all schools that request a recent photo looking for caucasian teachers only? Your help is greatly appreciated. |

Miles,
I suggest applying for all the jobs you think you'd fancy. The pics are usually used to help in placing potential employees in one of three categories:
Absolutely
Maybe
Absolutely not
(like university, though no pics are needed)
Remember, they may be using the pics to discriminate against those that do not fit your appearance....so fire them thar resumes out!

hate to say it...
i believe it is a 'white man/woman' image thing..
blond hair, blue eyes and the job is yours.
don't let that stop you though.. as ryst said, apply to everything you can.. you might be lucky enough to find a good school that can't find a teacher.
after all, how many blond canadian girls can there be?
remember, at the hakwons, we are the entertainment.. it wouldn't be 1/2 as much fun for the kids if you looked the same as them and not like a clown (foreigner).
i suggest applying at schools where education comes first |

Yeah, my director told me straight out that it was because she would only hire a 'white American.' The funny thing is that my last name is Fernandez and I'm Mexican. Ignorance is funny. |

Use your F4 status to work for yourself, there are no restrictions on you, you can do anything and everything related to English language services without needing sponsorship.
Prejudice against your status may not only be related to your ethnicity, but also due to your freedom to leave as you see fit. Employers have no hold over you. You are free. I envy you actually. |

There definitely is the potential to screen candiates on the basis of race, but it's standard practice to submit a photo with your resume here for the average Joon too.
Don't give up hope. |

I worked with a Korean Australian once, and she was doing on the side business teaching. At least 35,000 won per hour.
It made my hagwon boss furious once she found out, but the problem is that hagwons are pretty desperate for people that can do administrative and paper work and also teaching. Do you speak Korean? This would be important. |

Are you the person that had to teach Spanish even though you didn't speak it (they just assumed that you could)?
Pictures, they are wanted for every job in Korea, not just for English teachers. It is as essential on a resume here as your references.
