What rep is that Diver?
How widespread is that "rep"?
What about the fact that "reps" are most often based on rumors and unfounded or unverified information?
I do see your analogy to prove a point. However it was a [/i]faulty analogy.
Racism is unacceptable. Racism is also hard to measure and many times measured based on ones own ignorance and racism.
|
In addition to anecdotal evidence (which is not acceptable here), I could point to the behavior of Koreans towards Filipinos, which has been acknowledged by the Korean Embassy in Manila as one example of how they have gotten a reputation for treating others like crap. Is the Korean Embassy in Manila racist towards Koreans?
I don't believe that my analogy was faulty. I believe that some people don't want to see it. For my analogy to be faulty we would have to assume that the reasons that people use to explain away Korean racism ("They are just shy...") are legitimate while any excuse to explain away racism in the US is not. I believe that there is no excuse in both cases. How about you Gord?
However (and this is for Urban), I will make a concession. I will concede that my analogy was the worst analogy in the history of analogies. I will admit that my critical thinking prof from Uni has sent 2 e-mails and left one nasty message on my machine requesting that I stop making analogies because I am giving her a bad rep. I will admit that logic students will be studying my analogy for years to come as an example of how NOT to make an analogy.
But...nothing in life is free. I am prepared to make the above concession if Urban (and at least one or two other posters) will admit that a) since my poor analogy I have stated in clear and simple terms what my point was (that the excuse that people make for Korean racism are as ridiculous as if I tried to explain away racism in the US) b) that I have stated clearly that I do NOT believe that the treatment of ESL teachers in Korea is the same or as bad as that of African-Americans in the US c) that I have stated this at least THREE times and d) that despite all this, Urban (and some others) are continuing to to argue against something that I haven't said and have failed to either agree with my real point, or come up with an effective argument to rebut it. |

Last night I had a korean friend of mine calling around to real estate agents to check for apartment availabilities in the Hannam area (I move out at the end of August).
Every agent asked her, "Is your friend black?"
When she asked why, the response was, "'cause we don't like that."
Don't believe me? Go ahead and call...you'll see |

This has nothing to do with the price of tea in China...just the same...
this serial killer that was caught. Killed what...25???
Someone mentioned that the Military Officer who was killed in Itaewon and another who was killed a few years back.
Point? Had this been an American who killed...all of korea would be in an uproar! The whole country would be protesting!
Where is all the protesting because of the inept cops? Where is all the protesting because the police did not notify the public after the 4th, 5th, 6th or 7th murder. Let alone the 20th!
No protesting korea??? Pretty darn two faced I think!
But no, let's protest instead about the subway workers going on strike!
On the sitting...
Most koreans will not sit next to a foreigner.... most would stand. Get on the subway and just observe!
Why? Will something good rub off the foreigner onto the korean if they sit next to one another?
Maybe it's just me....
Now the rental agents are in an uproar because the U.S. military wants to save money and changed the rental system that koreans have been making a killing at for many years.
They are protesting.
My questions...
where are these protesters when other koreans are protesting against the U.S.?!?!?
Whose side are you on?!? I don't see these demostrators siding with the U.S. when others are against the U.S.!!
Just my rant... and I have many.
800 to lose jobs when the bases are relocated. Who told you to work for the base?!?!? That's your choice. Where are you korean military base workers when other koreans are protesting?!? How come you don't go out and protest against the protesters?!?
You can't have it both ways! |

I do, every day, and have never had an empty seat next to me when others have been standing. Has it crossed your mind that it might just be you?
Excuse me fancypants but this offering of yours is utter crap. Whiner. |

I was on the subway the other day with a space either side of me and thought of this thread, someone got on and sat next to me, no problems. It's not something I've ever noticed.
Do you look at people as they get on the train? In a big city people tend not to sit next to someone who makes eye contact. |

I don't find that they will stand rather than sit next to me but I do find that the seat next to me will be the last one filled especially on the larger busses (like 2002, 6006, etc..) |

| Me too Zed, and on the subway often people will get up to move away from me when another seat comes available. Also, sometimes, people will stand when there is a seat next to me. |

Time for a trip to the Red Door, or back home, to buy some deodorant. |

I've moved away on occasion when a Korean man has sat next to me because I can't stand the odor of cigarettes and/or alcohol. |

Yep..why is it that its never the smokin' hot, knee high socks wearing, pig tail sportin', big boob packin' woman that sits beside me? It always, without fail, the korean business man that reeks of garlic (kichi) and cigarettes who spends the trip making that barnyard pig sound of clearing the back of his throat/nostril cavity.
Its the same whenever I fly korean air. The bangin' set of japanese porn stars sit 4 rows in front of me while im wedged in between the korean business men who end up draped all over me, dry humping my leg two minutes after falling asleep. |

Do you know the tarrifs in the US? I put it to you that there are more than a few "mentally ill" inmates on death row. |
