I am looking to teach in Korea in a few months and have been actively reading up on this site for background info on Korea and the English teaching industry. I've read up on many different aspects of teaching and living in Korea and immensley enjoyed the accounts of some of the posters here. However, being young and open to occassionally being ..umm ..not-sober, I would be interested in hearing some accounts of the nightlife in Korea. How is it? Can a reasonably self-deluded, incredibly good-looking, witty, charmer such as myself find a cool place to be the center of attention in?
Being a 1st generation Korean American, I know how much the old folk from the motherland like to kick back a few hundred glasses of Soju on occassion(which is a nice way of saying Koreans are drunks). But i'm not really looking for places dominated by ajushi's. Are there many places to kick back a beer and party wit the ladies(ajumas need not apply)? Haven't been to Korea since age 11(14 years ago) and i was only just starting to learn to binge drink so not really informed about the current stae of the nightlife in Korea. Your help will be much appreciated. |

I should add that it is not my intention to offend anyone. I apologize in advance if I have offended any adjushis, ajummas, english teachers, or older people in general with this thread. Just read above with a grain of salt please. |

depends what you after. Hongdae has a great bar and club district hip hop, dance etc. Kind of like your bars back home. Itaewon is ok though slightly sleazer. There are of course korean style nightclubs but as I've yet to venture inside of one of those I leave someone else |

Well assuming you'll be in Seoul you can choose between Sinchon, Hongdae, Jong-no, Itaewon, Edae, Kondae etc. I'm pretty sure you could go to a different bar every night for several years.
Some are good, some are bad, but you aren't going to go thirsty. |

I think Korean bars (hofs) are fantastic. They are usually pretty clean and have nice comfortable furniture for you to sit on. There are bars everywhere...maybe at least one or two a block in the cities.
I agree with Crazymongirl though Hongdae is the place to go.
As for Korean Nightclubs they are also great. Some of them you pay a cover charge or you have to book ahead but some them you can just walk in. Though the music is pretty fast, it ends up growing on you eventually. Also with nightclubs everyone gets their own table, which is nice because they tend to get crowded. I highly recommend going to one.
Here in Gwangju we have (or so I have been told) the largest night club in Korea. Its called DONG YANG. The ceiling opens up and there are tonnes of lights and dancers and the dj comes down from the ceiling. They also stop the dancing twice a night for a floor show.
All and all its pretty cool.
I'll post u a pic when I get home |

Wow, look at all those people dancing and having a great time...Wait, no. They can't dance because the DJ won't shut up and he changes the song every 10 seconds, the women are all wearing heels and are too worried about their makeup not to mention getting close to a man in public, the men are too busy checking their feathered haircuts in the mirror and trying to justify paying 200 dollars for a bottle of whisky and a plate of fruit that looks like a peacock and nobody has to socialise when they can just order a waiter to drag a girl to their table and then sit there, not finding out about each other's personality, but smoking, grunting, bellowing and calculating the other person's worth by finding out how old they are, where they went to school and whether or not they work for a chaebol. What fun. |

So true!
Seriously though, there's definitely no shortage of decent nightlife here. |

Great, Kiwiboy and Wylde's love child has just entered the building. With some unfortunate Seoultrader ancestry in there somewhere. |

Haha, so true. I'm happy to no longer be in my twenties and hitting nightclubs the whole time. Nice to be over that whole thing.!! Your thirties are great years!!!! |

Disco23,
Thanks for your help. Your review was just the kind of information I was looking for.
Pyongshin,
Your cynicism is appreciated. Please excuse me as I kill myself now.
Corporal,
I am no love child of kiwiboy & wylde.
I know my choice of topics probably does not shed the best light on the seriousness of my intentions of being a caring and professional teacher in Korea - especially since you have no other body of work to make assumptions from. But I assure you, as much as I like to oogle pretty girls and knock back an occassional beer, I do have other interests and goals. I just happen to have the priorities of a normal man in his twenties - or maybe a normal man of any age.
Rapier,
I'm sure I'll be happy to be in my thirties when I am actually in my thirties and have no other choice but to make the best of it. For now, I'll just have to settle for being young, free, and naive/ambitious enough to chase the prettiest girls in the bar without fear.
Thank you all for your posts so far. Keep em coming! |

By the way, when going out in korea,
do you often see hot white chicks? and if so, are they always surrounded by like 190 dudes because they are so scarce?
so far from my short life experience, i like white girls better than korean girls. Maybe it is because i live in victoria bc, where there are only 500 koreans... but anyways, still.. lots of hot white chicks in korea? |
