Beaver.... the fat wayguk thing was a joke. But really we are all bigger in comparison.... so relax dude.

As for clothing... ya i guess Itaewon has clothes that fit, but for the most part, its all out of date styles and ugly clothes for ajuma's. Being a size 9, is not fat, but you won't be able to buy korean pants. Tops sure, no problem unless you have double D's.

Most of us gals i believe, order online. And i wear a size 9 shoe, and can barely find a pair that fits.

Stock up on pants, shoes you may be ok, but korean shoes are kinda ugh.

I tried to hold out for a year at my hagwon but the kids finally got the better of me. After being sworn at, had things thrown at me, and generally being treated like I clown, I've finally given up and packed it in.

The kids will make fun of you no matter what you look like. They're just being kids.

With me, they like to joke that I'm not really a waeguk because I'm on the lean side of things and go to the gym regularly. (they seem to think all waeguks are overweight slobs)

Just carry a big stick and even louder voice. (tis a joke for all your PC types).

Its your classroom. Control it, own it. Put the little buggers in their place.

Walk in to class like you own the place, lay down clear rules on day 1 especially a 'No Korean' rule, stick to the rules, reward good behaviour or correct answers with stickers, never let students get away with not listening, avoid losing your temper, have lots of stuff ready to keep the students busy, set time limits on activities to keep them going fast and reward the first to finish.

If/when any student calls you fat tell them firmly not to be rude (you can explain what 'rude' means with the little phrase 'no manner'). A second offense and you can throw them out of the class or stand them in the corner or whatever you feel they deserve.

Okay so I will bring all my clothes with me.

As far as discipline goes...I am imagining the worst. I read one horror story after another and am getting ahead of myself. I agree very much with the person who wrote about setting ground rules on day one. That is very helpful.

Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Any kid saying something about your appearance is going to happen, no matter how great you look. If it's not the usual "how far along are you" that I get from the kids, it's the questions on why my eyes are so round.

The big rule that you need to lay down, and lay this down with management first, is that there is no ramming fingers up your butt. We had that problem when the new year started here and had a whole slew of fresh kindies. At first management laughed it off as children being children. Then I put it into a new light: "In my culture, doing something like that is akin to rape."

No one does that to us anymore.

And to loosely paraphrase Pennywise the Evil Clown from It, "We're all fat down here!"

The ass-finger thing:

It's called a "dong-shim". Some kids think it is funny to do it to other kids and adults when their backs are turned and they are bending over.

The kid puts his hands together and makes a "gun" with their fingers, this is then rammed up the other (unaware) person's arse.

Much giggling ensues on the part of the thrustee. The thruster ...... well responses vary.

As far as I can tell it is not considered so strange here. Kids wouldn't do it to their public school teacher, but they do it to people who they feel comfortable with: other kids, family members, and some foreign teachers.

The more friendly and rough you play with your kids, the more likely they are to think it is ok to do. The more strict and distant you are, the less likely you are to get it (but you still will).

Usually it is not malicous - they genuanly think it is funny.

Ahhh. The great ħ. means shit and ħ is an accupuncture/accupressure term. When done correctly it'll incapicitate the receiver who will lie on the floor for a while. Fortunately, it's hard to do it correctly through clothing which, fortunately, everybody wears in the classroom.

If it happens just smack the offender in the head.
