I've been trying to find a pretty good job, but there's always something wrong and I keep turning them down. I'm beginning to think that I might be being too picky, and I'm just getting tired of sifting through job after job. So I've found a pretty decent job in Kangdong. But, from what I understand, Kangdong is on the outskirts of Seoul and not much of a place for foreign hangouts. Is that about right? I want to be in an area where it's going to be possible for me to go out a lot, but I don't know how long it would take to get to Hongdae or Itaewon so maybe it'll be more convenient than I think. I'd really appreciate some input. |

it's around a half hour on the subway to Itaewon from Gangdong station and while it's not super close to the foreign hangouts, it's a pretty convenient area as far as I can tell.
A word of advice- focus on getting a good job and worry about the going out stuff later. |

I've lived in Kangdong for about 16 months, it's pretty good.
I can walk to Olympic Park in about 15 minutes, 40 minutes on subway to Itaewon, 50 to Hongdae, 40 to Kangnam.
Definitley not a lot of foreigners here, but a decent number. Which can be nice at times, can you imagine spending a lot of time with the likes of the people you read here?!?
One problem, there is an army base about 30 minutes east of us so some of them come this way, and my word they are annoying. I don;t think any of them are over 19 and they all try their hardest to be the next Eminem. Actually, on second thought, it's kinda nice having them around. They're good for a laugh and they annoy the Korean women so much that they all come running to us English teachers for help. |

And...what were you doing at 19? Serving your country or just talking out of both sides of your mouth enjoying the finer things your country has to offer because of these 19 year olds who are in the military??!!? |

Ha,ha. I hate to throw this back in your face so easily, but, funnily enough, when I was 19 I was serving in the Canadian Reserves. (I'll skip the part where I tell you that I dropped out after about 4 months ... oops) Something about not being able to tell the people in charge of me that they were idiots made me realize that it wasn't for me. That, and all the running and pushups.
So after that, at 19 I was in school, working in a bank, and coaching hockey 6 hours a week. And in Canada being a hockey coach is kinda considered serving your country. We get the same respect and praise that Marines down south do (I know, it's crazy)
And hey, I respect the Old Boy servicemen, but most (not all, please, no body freak out on me) of the 19 year-olds I have met here have been slack-jawed yokels that dropped out of school at 16 and had nothing else they could do but join the army. |
