| Yeah, they seem pretty harmless. They're also apparently heavily involved in any kind of business where getting favors from the government/government contracts is helpful. |

So they are there but they dont do much. How about Russians. Are they in. Yeah these Kmafiosos really sound like poofs. Sex industry and racketeering is basic low level business for mafia. So basically they are just little kids.
You know what. How about we make our own family. ESL family. We can get more money, have more girls, forget the visas we can stay as long as we want and OWN the hagwons. Now that would be a good life in Korea. So how about it guys what do you think. I nominate myself as Don lovalova.

Not when the sex industry is as big as it is in Korea. They're not going to go out of their way to hurt you and they're hardly important by international standards, but they're not kids.

The Russians probably run a good bit of Itaewon and are definately involved with the pimping etc. of Eastern European "dancers." Also there's apparently Russian bicycle and whatnot theft rings in some places, but I think that's just about it although I'm hardly an expert. |

| Ive had drinks with a couple of the Itaewon guys. I was aware of the line of work they were in. Absolutely no worries at all from my end, bit of a novelty factor for them i suppose. |

Drank with gangsters from Jongno once. They ran a room salon. Was fun, but at the time my KOrean was quite poor (well it still is .... but now I can communicate, then I couldn't) and only one guy spoke English.
They seemed rather tame. But they really do wear clothes like you see in the KOrean ganster movies. |

Has anyone heard of Korean mafia? I think NKorea has mafia but not SKorea. I could understand why NK would have mafia being under the communist thumb and all. Now how about SK. Do they have something like that or at least some organised crime. Anything that is not an ordinary theft or a simple act of violence. So how about it. Does SK have mafia?
Ciao.

If you mean mafia by a group of people perpetrating organized crimes, yeah of course there are. In fact, there are quite a few of them. There is this legendary, famous guy who was supposedly fought against Japanese gangs moving in during Japanese occupation period in early 1900's. Since then, the gangs were known to be associated with politicians to control the outcome of elections or business folks to intimidate competitors and such.
There is no one big gang in Korea. Most gangs control regional areas, and they do sometimes get in to turf wars. Since firearms are not allowed in Korea, most gangs use old weapons like swords, knives, bats, etc. They don't get involved with petty crimes, but mostly collecting protection money (like old Mafia) from businesses, prostitution, racketeering, etc. You can relate most of gangs in Korea to Yakuza system in Japan.
So, yeah, they have no reason to get involved with foreigners, unless they see a way to make good profits using foreigners. |
