Are there any cool cave systems in Korea that are open to the public for spelunking?

Not sure about spelunking, but there are caves near Seokcho that are huge.

i think the ones near samcheok are the biggest....i'm going there tonight, for four days....i'll let you know. i'd be surprised if there's a lot of exploration allowed,... probably a neatly laid brick path through the caves with places here and there for photo opportunities, food vendors.....haha. we'll see.

That's pretty much it, but the walk up is beautiful and the caves are refreshingly cool.

And the metal staircases. Don't forget those.

It does make it more of an adventure, though. Steep metal staircases plus dripping water = fun. Laughing

Samcheok is where I was thinking earlier- duh! There's also a small cave that you can walk around in right in the centre of Donghae City. Beware, when I was there, the "watch your head" signs were only in Korean Mad

hey, just got back from samcheok and visited hwangsongul cave....yeah, the walk up was beautiful....even in 40 degree weather and the cave itself was pretty good. my favorite was the various names given to the caverns, pits, bridges, wings, whatever...off the top of my head, there was the cave of desire, the bridge of hell (with little skeleton ornaments on top), the palace of dreams, the bridge of confessions .... really enhanced the experience, ya know? Confused

i had to laugh too, because they didn't give much information to tourists about how to behave in the caves. i know from my previous trip to the mammoth caves in kentucky that it's really bad to touch the cave, especially the cool formations since the oil from your hand can affect them.....i saw several people running their hands over the cave walls......

>. Dunno too much about caves, but i can tell you Korea is apparently one of the most tunneled countries in the world.

i took a bus from the express bus terminal, and i stayed in samcheok four nights, but i went mostly for the beaches. there are tonnes of motels and minbaks around. unless you have a favourite spot, i found it good to stay near the samcheok terminal because the buses go from there out to all the beaches down the coast, and of course, the cave.

would i recommend going to see just the cave?...i don't know. i would definitely recommend samcheok if you have a long weekend or something and you could take in some beaches as well as the cave. the cave only takes an hour to go through....there's no exploration...you follow a metal path the entire way.

I've heard of a cave in which the water freezes in the summer and runs freely in the winter...several K's have told me of it but I don't remember where it is....anyone know of this cave?

If you take the train from Cheongnyangni station in Seoul that travels to Chongdongjin (where many young Koreans go to watch the sunrise -- the train station is literally next to the strand), some of those trains will also travel down the spur line to Samcheok.

In Choongbook, Danyang there is a pretty decent cave system called Go-soo Dong-gool.

Zyzyfer and I rode our bikes there last year, was nice (but much longer a ride than we expected....and paid for it with less-than adequate clothing for a night ride back). Anyhow, I digress...

The caves were long enough to enjoy, but go on a weekday....you don't want the 'balli balli' mentality pushing you through (as the weekend walks will have many more travellers).

Be sure to see the magestic waterfall....and bring a watch (ask Zyz).

I forgot the name, but I believe it's in Gangwon-do. Yeah, needle+haystack.
