Other defectors complain of bias and discrimination - feeling that many South Koreans regard them as second class citizens.
"If people heard my North Korean accent, I'd be overcharged at markets, and taxi drivers would treat me very badly," said one former defector, who now works in an insurance company.
How nice of the S. Koreans. I got this from an article from BBC.com
an other article on there mentioned that S. Korean only took them when the South east asain country holding them threatened to send them to China. Where of course they would have been sent back to N. Korea. |

This is a national disgrace. If the SKorean government had any balls whatsoever it'd make getting NKorean refugees out of China and into SKorea (ie something along the lines of the Mossad's involvement in the aliyah (sp?) of the Sephardim). |

I can imagine what would happen if reunification really took place. The N.K's would be second class citizens, almost slave labour really. The S.K's would walk all over them for a few decades, treat them really bad. I hope reunification doesn't happen, simply to protect the innocent Northerners |

Accepting too many refugees really might disturb the "sunshine policy", wouldn't it? |

I read the "aquariums of Pyongyang" (first hand account of a defector).
In his memoirs he states that Northerners and southerners had a strong dislike for eachother and history of bad blood, long before the partition of korea.
Southerners were seen as devious, underhand, snooby people interested only in making money. Also soft, as southerners formed the officer class in the army while tough northerners made the excellent fighting soldiers.
Northerners were seen as tougher and more friendly and genuine. He even said that Northerners were taller and stronger on average.
Its almost like England: tough northerners of historically viking blood form the working class, while snobby well educated southerners of anglo-saxon blood, form the white collar business/middle class. |

Except now they're all shorter in the North from lack of good nutritious foods, like McDonalds. |

You are nearly right.......Southern Englanders would be from a Norman(French) bloodline....(Anglo saxons are from everywhere in England). |

Same thing happened after the reunification of Germany. After the initial euphoria, West Germans bore (and still do) an awful resentment towards their Eastern brothers and sisters for being such a drain on the economy. I experienced it teaching in UK only about 4-5 years ago, an East German girl I taught (about 19) was absolutely mercilessly mocked (her accent, her economic status, her supposed lack of personal hygiene). I knew this as I was teaching older Germans who told me about the kind of language they were using. It doesn't take long I think before the things which divided the peoples' in the first place begin to show.
I don't imagine things are any different with Koreans, the peninsula has been divided since long before the cold war. |

Was eastern Germany economically underprivileged before WWII?
Perhaps I'm misinterpreting your post? |

I've just read it back and see that it's confusing, esp my last sentence. Sorry. No, it wasn't, I wasn't referring to pre-war times for Germany, just Korea. Your question actually raises another point, that there was so much resentment and conflict among East and West Germans after 1991, even though their divisions aren't historically that deep. Actually the divisions between Bavarians and other Germans are deeper historically. So imagine what Korea would be like.
So, a United Korea would take decades to settle down, and the North would be an economic vacuum. I've not heard that many Koreans saying they want reunification, I have found most of them don't really like to talk about it, because they don't (IMO) like to admit the reality that they don't want to dig too deep into their own pockets to pay the huge costs that would be involved, deal with the mass unemployment, as well as the cultural conflicts that would occur. It would be an admission of callousness, one though, that I wouldn't blame them for. If reunification ever happens, I don't think it will happen in the same way it did in Germany, and I think the majority of South Koreans at least secretly hope it doesn't. |

you mean like how the mossad planted bombs in synagogues in iraq and egypt to convince the jews they were under attack so they would flee to israel?
that comparison doesnt work. jews in arab countries weren't starving and suffering the way north koreans are. and even with that, a NK defector said that many NK's come to the south not cuz they're starving but so they can have "freedom": http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/3932591.stm
israel's efforts at bringing arab jews to israel are just as motivated by crass political goals as SK is by juggling NK refugees. governments never do something for ethical reasons unless it also serves a political purpose |

The typo in the title of this thread is really bugging me.
Sorry, I know that's pedantic, but it drives me crazy. That's all I have to say on the matter. Thankyou for your time. |

Actually, the South Koreans do want unification, but just not now. They want to wait until after the US and Japan and other countries pay to build up the North. |

He's also full of shit.
I have been to North Korea. I have seen North Koreans. Most adults are about 5 feet and 2 inches tall.
The soldiers I had met on patrol on the Chinese-North Korean border are about the same height. Under 5'5" for sure. I am 5'7", and they were all shorter than me.
All the North Koreans I have met here in China have been waaaay short. Many under 5 feet! |

Already happening. While there are no official stats, rumour stats suggest that NK's economy is 40% dependent upon that of the south. |
